A MOTHER who reported her son to police has spoken of her grief after he died in a Hampshire prison.

Sharron Lewis contacted authorities after recognising Sheldon Woodford on CCTV footage of an elderly woman being robbed.

Woodford, 24, died at Winchester Prison last Thursday, weeks after he was jailed for stealing a handbag. Reports claim he hanged himself.

Ms Lewis said: ''I have asked myself and people around me, 'did I do the right thing?'. Everyone has said 'yes' but it doesn't make me feel any better.''

A Prison Service spokesperson said: ''HMP Winchester prisoner Sheldon Woodford died in hospital at 2.10pm on Thursday 12 March.

''Every death in custody is a tragedy and as with all deaths, there will be an investigation by the independent prisons and probation ombudsman.''
