POLICE are investigating after a bus shelter was destroyed in a suspected hit and run.

A passer-by called police at 3.34am this morning after noticing the damage at the junction of Andover Road and Stoney Lane, in Weeke.

A sign and the bus shelter appear to have been completely flattened.

Nearby residents say they heard a loud bang followed by a revving engine and a vehicle driving away.

Police said they will take “proportionate investigations” to find out how it happened.

The shelter is on a main route into Winchester city centre.

Anyone with information should call 101, or to be anonymous the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
