DETECTIVES have launched a murder inquiry after a man died of serious injuries in Southampton yesterday.

Police found the victim with life-threatening injuries after being called to an address in Malmesbury Road, Shirley, at 1.20pm.

Officers say the man, who is yet to be identified, was later pronounced dead.

Hampshire Police are now working to trace and inform his immediate family.

Major crime team officers are working on the probe and have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

The suspect, aged in his 40s, was taken into custody where he is being questioned this evening.

The property, thought to be a studio flat, in Malmesbury Road, has been sealed off by police all afternoon.

Daily Echo:

Forensic officers wearing white boiler suits have been going in and out of the address where windows on the ground floor have been opened wide.

Residents have spoken of their shock at the incident.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said police swooped on the road at about 1pm.

He said: "There were about four police cars and an ambulance.

"They blocked off the entire street for at least an hour.

"They pulled the ambulance out and brought a man out on a spinal board.

"It's a quiet street, I haven't seen anything like this happening on the doorstep before."

Another resident said: "I went out to take the rubbish out and I saw a police van backing down the street.

"One of my neighbours said he saw a man being put into the van and being taken away.

"I then saw another man, who I think was in his twenties, being taken out of the house on a spinal board."

Another resident said: "The people living in the flat above have been told they can't go back while the investigation happens.

"It's distressing."
