DRIVERS have been warned after a motorist was offered gold for cash in a possible scam on a major road.

A woman said she was flagged down by a driver who claimed his credit card had stopped working.

He offered her what appeared to be gold in exchange for some cash.

Hampshire Constabulary says that previous scams investigated by officers have seen highly polished copper made to look like gold, which has then been offered in return for cash.

The man is described as of Middle Eastern origin, aged in his 30s and spoke German and English.

He was 5ft 4ins, of a chubby build and wore a red chequered shirt and a brown jacket.

His car was described as dark blue. Three other men were seen inside.

It was reported at around 1pm on Monday, November 16, on the slip road connecting Tot Hill Services, near Highclere, with the southbound A34.

Officers have said that anyone who spots similar suspicious activity at the roadside should call police immediately, and record the registration number of the vehicle.

They add that if you suspect someone’s request for help isn’t genuine, don’t be afraid to refuse, especially if you think that person is trying to scam you, and call police immediately.

Police also want victims who haven’t yet come forward to contact them as soon as possible to help their enquiries and trace the people doing this.
