A COMMUNITY safety officer has appeared in court charged with assaulting a teenager.

Norman Bareham appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday after the alleged assault involving a 16-year-old boy in Hythe High Street on April 7.

The case was adjourned and the 68-year-old from Dibden Purlieu will return to the same court on August 9.

Community safety officers are employed by councils to deal with issues such as littering, graffiti and the confiscation of alcohol, often through the use of on-the-spot fines.
