POLICE are dealing with soaring levels of burglaries across Hampshire, latest figures have revealed.

In just one week 35 homes were hit by thieves who are preying on properties left largely insecure.

Patrols are being stepped up in areas which have seen repeated targeting and police are issuing an urgent warning to residents to step up security.

Historically burglaries rise during the summer months the warmer weather sees families spend more time outside with windows and sometimes doors left unlocked or open.

Now as warmer weather continues to be forecast for large parts of the summer homeowners are being urged not to forget their home security.

Last week across Southampton, New Forest, Eastleigh and Romsey police dealt with 35 reported burglaries.

That compares with 28 for the week ending July 14 when the weather was milder and prior to schools breaking up for summer.

Officers have increased patrols in affected areas and are reminding people to remain vigilant and report anyone or anything suspicious.

Thousands of pounds of property including electrical items like laptops and TVs have been stolen, as well as sentimental items of jewellery, bikes and even crates of red wine.

Seven push bikes have also been stolen in the raids during the course of a week.

Detective Inspector John McGonigle said: “Not every address was recorded as being insecure, however at this time of year it is not unusual for burglary rates to rise along with the temperature.

“The summer days have meant we’re more likely to leave doors and windows open to keep our homes cool. Although this may make your house more bearable when you return home, leaving windows open all day is sometimes an invitation for the opportunistic burglar.

“Similarly, it’s important to lock garden gates and garage doors when you’re not around. Tidy tools away, don’t leave valuables on display and ensure you lock up properly before going to bed.

“This is the time you may be out all day enjoying the sun or taking a holiday abroad. After insuring your home is secure as possible, try to refrain from posting where you’re going on social media, this only highlights to thieves that your house is empty.

“If you seen anyone acting suspiciously call 101. If you seen anyone enter a property suspiciously, call 999.”

Among the property taken, a gentleman’s gold pocket watch engraved with the date 1936 was stolen, along with boxes of Casillero Del Diablo wine.
