A HIGH-SPEED car chase took place on the streets of Southampton as a man fled the scene of an alleged assault.

Police pursued the man, a 26-year-old from London, after an incident in Mayflower Park.

Officers chased the black Jeep through busy residential streets just after 7.45pm on Thursday.

The Jeep driver, who has not been named, then lost police after heading down Darwin Road.

The Jeep was then involved in a collision on Landguard Road after smashing into a number of vehicles on Hill Lane.

He was arrested shortly after 8.05pm.

A driver, who witnessed the chase, said: “It was carnage. I was driving down towards the junction at the bottom of Hill Lane and as I stopped this black Jeep came from out of nowhere.

“It smashed up the front of the red car in front of me, and sped on away.

“About 10 seconds later around four police cars came tearing down Hill Lane after the Jeep.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It was like being in a film.”

The Daily Echo contacted the South Central Ambulance Service regarding the alleged assault, but a spokeswoman confirmed no ambulance attended the scene.
