POLICE have arrested nine people as part of a long-running campaign to reduce drug-related crime in Southampton.

Officers carried out two operations aimed at targeting people contributing to drug supply and supporting those on the edge of the drugs trade in a bid to help them avoid a life of crime.

In the first operation officers arrested four people for alleged drug offences.

Three adults aged 19, 20 and 24 and a 16-year-old boy, all from London, were detained on suspicion of being involved in the supply of class A drugs after being observed by officers acting suspiciously on Regents Street.

All four have since been released but remain under investigation.

In the second operation officers arrested five people on suspicion of various offences including theft and driving under the influence of drugs.

Rosslyn Daniel Bayley, 25, of Whitworth Crescent, Southampton, has since been charged with possessing cocaine and cannabis. Dennis Vata, 20, of no fixed address, has been charged with possession with intent to supply heroin and cocaine.

Three other people - two 28-year-old men and a 28-year-old woman - have been released but remain under police investigation.

The two operations were carried out as part of the Operation Fortress campaign.

A police spokesman said: “The campaign looks to reduce the harm caused by drugs by specifically targeting those who bring misery to the city through drug supply, and supporting those found to be exploited and on the periphery of crime by offering diversionary tactics through joint working with partner agencies.”

People who witness drug-dealing, or are concerned about drug-related activity in their community is urged to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Drug users aged 25 and over can contact the Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service, on 023 8071 7171, for help.

Those aged 24 and under can call Drug Alcohol Support and Health on 023 8022 4224.
