IN THE news the powers that be are thinking of arming rural policemen owing to the increase in violent crime in rural areas.

Britain always prided itself that ordinary Bobbies do not carry guns. One of the few major countries in which police are not armed.

The rule of law is breaking down with some areas becoming virtually no go areas so violent that police will not police them.

The British, by and large, respect the law but is it reasonable to ask our police to deal with situations unarmed in today’s violent society?

Sadly arming ordinary policemen is inevitable, even though the British public and police do not really want it.
