A HAMPSHIRE driver who killed a teenage motorcyclist after crashing into him has avoided a jail sentence.

Daniel Cook was sentenced to a 12-month community order, doing 100 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for a year.

The 22-year-old from Gudge Heath Lane, Fareham, was also fined £250, at Portsmouth Crown Court this morning, after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving last month.

The court heard how Nicholas Hobbs died after his Suzuki bike collided with Cook's Volkswagen Golf as they travelled in opposite directions along Warsash Road, Fareham.

The accident happened when Cook turned right into the Silver Fern pub, failing to see the 19-year-old on his motorbike.

Nick, of nearby Saxon Close, was rushed to Southampton General Hospital but died an hour later from his injuries.
