Southampton's Bliss night to open late for Judge Jules visit

A NIGHTCLUB has won permission to open later for Radio 1 DJ Judge Jules in the face of objections from police, who want its licence reviewed.

Police raised “serious concerns” about the running of the Bliss Clubrooms in Southampton, blaming bouncers for 14 of the 36 alleged assaults in or outside the nightspot. They fear more were not recorded.

In an official report to the city council, Sgt Ivan Marshman even went as far as accusing management of “covering up” an assault by doormen of a drunk, encouraging a punter to run off after another assault, and failing to call police after a “glassing” incident.

He said police had also received reports of bar staff watering down vodka and door staff failing to check the toilets when they were aware people may have been using them to take drugs.

The allegations were detailed in a dossier to councillors objecting to extended hours for Judge Jules to play at a Valentine’s ball on Saturday, February 13 – the day Southampton face Portsmouth in the FA Cup – and a party to celebrate Chinese New Year on February 14.

However, Sgt Marshman agreed to withdraw an accusation that there was a “disorderly, illegal ethos that runs deep within the club” and that it was “poorly run”.

Solicitor Jonathan Smith, for Bliss, said a contract with local firm Secridoor had been terminated and national player Bridgegate Security had brought in a new team of doormen.

Bridgegate operations director Shane Cooke told councillors all incidents would now be logged, adding: “I don’t have bouncers. I have customer care assistants.”

Mr Smith said the designated premises supervisor had been suspended and the doorman accused of the assault had been dismissed.

He said the number of assaults was a tiny percentage of the 106,000 clubbers that came through the doors last year, and that unsubstantiated allegations could have come from disgruntled staff or customers.

He added that fans wearing football shirts would not be allowed in and there had been no record of football matches resulting in increased violence at the club.

Mr Smith also promised councillors that glass bottles would be replaced with plastic ones.

Licensing panel chairman Brian Parnell said it was not “reasonable or proportionate” to refuse the temporary event licences.

But police are now calling for councillors to review the club’s licence for breaching its licensing objectives. It could result in its licence being revoked.

The Daily Echo revealed in December how only one city bar has had its licence reviewed in the past three years, while south coast neighbours Portsmouth had looked again at 11.

Bliss Clubrooms in Vincents Walk, on the site formerly occupied by Ocean & Collins and before that Chicago Rock, underwent a huge refurbishment ahead of its opening in September. The club declined to comment.

Well done Echo.

Yet more facts wrong

The Judge Jules event is on Friday 12th Feb & not the day of the Saints v Pompey clash!

I was driving my bus past there a few weeks ago and some drunk came running out in front of me, chased by 2 bouncers and then battered to the floor!

They have the worst bouncers ever. They let in a bunch of drunk women. Then a couple of men want to go in there, stone-cold sober, and get refused entry. Their excuse? 'No reason, just not tonight'.
Rubbish club anyways. Too small

So the council get a chance to put there foot down and prevent an extended licence to a bar that according to reports is not very well run. They have the powers to revoke and reject licences why dont they instead of whinging and blaming national government.
.
Even the police have concerns. But no this council is all mouth and NO action.
.
The Council have enough powers available to them. Work with the Police and use them instead of the normal PR soundbites

Absolutely agree with you. There have been a number of stories in the Echo recently about how the Council want to reduce drunkeness and trouble around Bedford Place, the appointment of a new night-time manager and mounted police, and yet when the Council get a chance to actually do something about it, even following police advice they refuse!
You have to wonder why the police bother at all if they're just going to be ignored.

An awful decision! Typical Council attitude - say one thing do another! A good example of why the responsibities for licencing should never have been transferred to the Council - too many irons in the fire with no responsibility for crime. At least when it was with magistrates their objectives were based crime prevention and took a balanced view without having one eye on the 'night economy' which this Council is hell bent on increasing!

Seriously?? This club does, and always has, been a host to most of Southampton's worst pikey clans.

Grant this club its extended license, please, because without it all the clientel will move up town to invade the nicer area.

I can't stand it when people are this narrow minded. Do you know the full story to this situation? Perhaps the doormen were trying to restrain this man because he was being violent against others? Maybe he started a fight with a woman? Would you ever stop and think that maybe they were doing their job and protecting others from getting hurt? I would love to see what you would do in their situation. Doormen get too much stick for their job. Police get weapons to protect themselves and restrain people... Doorman having nothing but their bare hands...and their job? To try and maintain order and protect the customers in a night club. It is not their fault that people are aggressive and start fights or don't know their limits. There is not enough praise for doormen, I thank them for making my nights safer!

Why on earth would a Radio 1 DJ want to associate himself with a club which has such a poor reputation?

Yes, bouncers get a lot of stick, some of it unfair under the circumstances, but the evidence isn't exactly in their favour in this case. Failing to call the emergency services after a glassing incident and covering up assaults is clear evidence of bouncers acting in an unprofessional manner. Clearly this place has some serious issues which need addressing.

Redback says...
3:02pm Mon 1 Feb 10

Why do doormen have such a bad image then, door supervisor and friends? Could it be based on common experience perhaps? Or do you think that folks just have a natural prejudice against people standing in entranceways?

I don't know anyone of my age that hasn't had at least one bad experience with an 'over zealous' (read pumped-up and looking for a fight) door person.

If they weren't there at all then there really would be problems. And I bet people would soon change their minds. I think its ridiculous they get bad mouthed so much. And generally these 'bad experiences' are people who have acted inappropriately but like a lot of people these days, blame everyone else but themselves! If people don't want these incidents' to happen, don't act inappropriately! Blame the publics lack of social etiquette, not doorman who have to deal with the consequences of this! It really is a shame that peoples prejudices based on a few bad doormen impact on their opinion of those who do their job really well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully in favour of clamping down where necessary but some of the accusations flying around here (Pikey's??? FFS) are just plain daft. People ARE allowed to enjoy themselves now and again, it's not a permanent extended licence and Judge Jules will attract a 'better' crowd, as no doubt will the 'ehanced' door fee!

I cannot imagine why it is that we are not learning anything from all these problems at all; from bouncers who cannot do the job to grevious bodily harm on licensed premises. Either the council should be shut down for having the most drongos in its licensing office, or all the clubs should be shut down. Either way, someone needs to sort it out.

I do feel sorry for the police when they go to all that trouble and then the panel let the club get everything they want.
Residents wants Bedford Place made an Alcohol Disorder Zone, local citizens are awoken by drunks nightly every few minutes between 1-3.30 a.m. but our Council refuse.

Oh I think the council can get quite nasty about anything and everything, quite frankly. They seem to think that everything that anybody reports is suspicious and that they are the only arbiters of what is good and right in this city. If they had brains they would indeed be dangerous.

to be fair, i'm not a pikey!!, i'm a 31 year old mother of four lovely children and i go to bliss and went to ocean and collins before that, i admit there are a fair few fights in there but its because the youngsters all drink stupid amounts of alcohol then get lairy and start a punch up, what are the bouncers supposed to do? let them hurt people who are just there to have a bit of fun?. many a time the bouncers have stopped a fight that has broken out near me and saved me from harm. why should all these places be shut down just because a few ruin it for the majority of us that just like to have a few drinks and a dance?? also im sorry but you cant tell me there are no fights at oceana etc either because i saw 5 in one night there inside the place and a huge one outside where the police had to come and arrest 5 or 6 lads so its not just bliss that has lairy lads and lairy laddettes as customers!!

I dont know if enjoyment is the word; I dont quite know that I'd ever want to go in one of those places whereby I knew that there was a risk of a fight breaking out and that I would get in the firing line. After all I will be nearly 60 before too long; not a spring chicken by any means. I love to see people enjoying themselves but not by these means.

What I dont understand is that a lot of our youth dont seem to want to be known for anything except having an ASBO or a criminal record for half killing someone or being the scourge of their neighbourhoods. This is why people keep talking about broken Britain. This is no longer a conversation or dialogue about a night out; its a debate about where our country is going as a place where we can all live and work together in peace.

But what hope is there when all our youngsters can see that those in political authority are bent out of shape and corrupt. We need to get back our country before it slides into the abyss of total chaos.

the night you mention in Oceana was a Friday night about 6 months ago when a large group intent on causing trouble entered the venue in small groups. They eventually where all arrested by McDonalds.
No other customers where involved and the incident was logged and Police informed.
Incidents will always happen - it's how they are dealt with in my opinion.
