Nigel Price in coma after attack on Southampton Common

FOR almost three months he has lay, unresponsive, in a hospital bed.

Badly beaten and barely recognisable, Nigel Price suffered life-threatening head injuries during a vicious attack on Southampton Common.

Doctors caring for the 58-year-old – who has no family – can’t be sure he will ever recover.

Now, some ten weeks on from the horrific assault, detectives are hoping the disturbing images of Mr Price’s injuries will help them discover just what happened to him.

Unconscious and covered in blood, he was found by a dog walker the following morning, lying face down in bushes.

It was on the evening of Friday November 13 that Mr Price walked through Southampton Common after leaving The Cowherds pub, where he can be seen on CCTV cameras.

Along Cemetery Lane a short time later he was beaten in an attack that left his eyes and head severely bruised and swollen and his face smothered in blood.

It’s thought he managed to make his way into the centre of the Common where he was discovered the following day.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he remained critically ill in a coma for several weeks. Since then he has made only slight improvement and is now in a semi-conscious state although unable to communicate properly.

A week after the attack police returned to the scene, near Hill Lane and Cemetery Road, in a high-profile operation to try and find out what had happened and trace vital witnesses – but have so far drawn a blank.

They believe Mr Price may have been a victim of a homophobic attack and have taken the unusual step of releasing the graphic images of Mr Price in the hope that someone will come forward.

Detective sergeant Matt Taylor, leading the investigation, said: “Mr Price’s injuries were extremely severe and although his condition has slightly improved he remains in a comalike state and unable to speak to us and tell us what happened.

“We are determined to find those responsible for this attack and bring them to justice, and hope that in releasing these images we will either shock someone into coming forward or jog someone’s memory who may have seen him around the time it happened.”

Det Sgt Taylor added: “It’s likely that dog walkers and joggers will have been on the Common at this time and may have seen Mr Price – we need to hear from them as they may have vital information.”

Officers are particularly trying to locate three people seen around the covered reservoir area at about 7am on the Saturday morning and two men seen talking to the victim around 8.50pm on the night of the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Operation Levy team at Bitterne CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

So sad that this man has no family. I hope the person who did this finds their conscience and hands themselves in.

hardly likely, we're still waiting for the scum who beat up that Man U fan in St Marys to come forward nearly 5 years later.

Utterly disgraceful. Who could do this to another person?

The people who did this are the same people who make this city a nasty place. They are the skidmarks of Southampton. If any of them are reading this (if they can read that is) then take in what I just said. You are inferior scum and you will get caught.

You might be waiting for them to come forward, I think you'll have a long wait! Alleged culprits arrested, couldn't make a case - thats it for that one;by all accounts much in the same way as the lad from Cardiff, the Manchester 'Family man' was engaging in behaviour that most true fans would disapprove of.

Why have the Echo chosen to use a police photo of this man? Begs questions maybe!

What makes a human being, and I use the term loosely here; think they can do this to another human being and it not be wrong?

Of course, if the plod get lucky and get the perpetrator of this hideous crime, it will be no time at all until some fancy defence barrister is bleating on about what a terribly abusive childhood the little shyte suffered and how in doing this he had no control etc. etc. ad nauseum.

Whoever did this wont go to jail or if they do it will be for no time at all. We can only hope that at some point in the future Karma will beat this so and so firmly in the 'arris!

An astonishingly sickening attack. If they catch those responsible, let's hope the culprits get many years in prison to contemplate their evil.

What I hope the Police will note from this incident is that this possible homophobic attack is probably as a result on Cemetery Road's reputation as a homosexual/male prostitute location This needs addressing urgently if others are to avoid a similar dreadful assault.

Terrible incident but RJC does raise a relevant point as far as certain well known areas that have become well established 'assignation' zones for those that indulge

These seedy locations carry a risk of homophobic attacks and this is mirrored all over the country. Some might suggest that it is a 'calculated' risk and forms part of the 'thrill' although mostly referring to 'being caught' or 'discovered' IN FLAGRANTE DELECTO .

In basic terms - sex with a stranger and not just a homosexual preserve. We see the incidences of 'dogging' so not far removed from this subject. I have no problems with whatever people get up to but preferably in the privacy of their homes. 'Cottaging' will always carry risks- especially healthwise apart from the violent aspect

I really hope that this guy recovers and that the sick scum get their come-uppance
