Violence after FA Cup clash

Portsmouth fans are escorted to St Mary's Portsmouth fans are escorted to St Mary's

VIOLENCE flared up outside St Mary's stadium following Saints' 4:1 FA Cup defeat.

Police let both groups of fans leave St Mary's at the same time leading to a stand off between some home and opposition fans.

A group of Pompey fans and Saints fans taunted each other either side of a wire fence at the Freeborn Garage in Britannia Road, as police tried to seize control.

They could also be seen throwing bottles and coins at each other.

The windscreen of one of the cars parked in the garage's forecourt was smashed. Other cars were dented and had their rear windscreen wipers and wing mirrors ripped off.

On match days the forecourt is used for VIP parking.

Mounted police tried to push the Saints fans, who had headed for the garage after the game finished, away from the area.

Most of the Pompey fans travelling by train have now been escorted back to Southampton central railway station.

One eye witness said that while there was no obvious signs of trouble, the fans were less tightly contained by police compared to on the way to the game.

In total police made 11 arrests throughout the day, mostly for public order offences.

and what bright spark let them out at the same time!!! honestly..... all that policing and then a basic error like that.....

Bad Luck Saints :( played really well first half, great come back goal but we were outclassed, Pompey felt Jamie O'Hara's presence back and well deserved man of the match. Very exciting game, shame we didn't get the result we wanted :(

Around half the pompey fans stayed in the ground for about 10 mins after the game ended, wether they were stopped or stayed there for their own safety, not sure.

Don't agree we were outclassed.
Had Waigo and Lallana taken their chances we would have been 2 or 3 goals clear.
The only area where Pompey were superior was in their goal taking ability and that was made easy for them when, at 2-1, we went with just 3 at the back and got caught on the break.
We may have lost the game but it was a moral victory for us, because they know that the gap between both teams is very little.

As I saw it on TV, many Saints fans had left, or were leaving, when the 4th goal went in, and when Avram Grant was being interviewed after the match, the Pompey Chimes could be heard coming from the stadium!

Yes I agree with you, I think what I meant was we were outclassed after the third goal went in plus O'Hara and James were outstanding we seemed to lose confidence after that... but I'm no football expert by any means!! will no doubt get the full run down when eldest returns from the match soon! great to see so many great comments about Saints performance too here :) would have loved to have gone....only one season ticket in our house though, tough times lol!

Im sorry but Saints were no dis-grace. Regardless of pompeys current financial situation they are after all premier league players up against league 1. Saints went for it and to be fair ran out of steam towards the end. For the majority of the game they were on an even par, if not better, than pompey so to call them a disgrace was perhaps a little harsh?

so when the police said they have everythink worked out and weeks of planning has gone into this game didnt anyone think about what would happen with the fan after the game. I must say this is down to poor planning. also why was a banned fan in the stadium what an insult to fans.

Mate, the 'less-desirable' elements of the saints' fanbase pride themselves as being an 'up and coming' firm. That is - having a good number of people looking for deliberate aggro against like minded members of the opposition.

My point is, that if you banned the skates on that basis, you'd have to ban the home support as well.

Solution:- police should ask " who wants to fight then?" Those accepting the offer should be led to a field and let them get on with it. Then when all is done, sterilise the lot of them.

If you look at the first paragraph, it says the confrontation took place AFTER the match.
If you listen to the commentary that accompanies the story, the reporter is stating that it was taking place BEFORE the match!
The point I was making was that, if Pompey fans were still in the St Marys some little while after the match ended, singing the Pompey Chimes and Saints left the stadium more than ten minutes before, who confronted who?

Er... really? Okay.

1) There was trouble before AND after the match.

2) The entire crowd don't move around together. Just because there were enough fans in the stadium to sing whatever, doesn't mean that groups hadn't left.

Happy to help. :-)

Did we think we would have gone much further in the Competition anyway? Let them have the bragging rights for a little while longer, as long as they survive, our turn will come, and won't we enjoy that, gives you something to look forward to. As for today, I thought we matched them until the first goal, still in it when we equalised, but it was obvious the legs were starting to go, had we taken the chances in the first half things might have been different, I am disapointed but I will get over it.

i'm sorry expatmanila but you don't see the whole picture if you're not there. I'm proud to be a saint today as we were the better team and the better supporters (they only sing when their winning - really quiet after we scored) for 65mins. But in the end you have to accept their Premiership class showed and they had an extra yard of pace that caught us out when they counterattacked. Would you of rather we shut up shop at 2-1 to limit the score or go for it as we did. I'm proud of the team, proud to be in AP's R&W Army and proud of my fellow supporters.

Abandoning there own team ?, the reason I left early was I took 2 small children and wanted to make a SAFE and quick exit. And after watching all the idots causing trouble I am glad I did. I have a season ticket and go to lots of away games (including Oldham) so please dont tar everyone who leaves early with the same brush, as some have good reason..

A Lakota Legend

There was another world before this one. But the people of that world did not behave themselves. Displeased, the Creating Power set out to make a new world. He sang several songs to bring rain, which poured stronger with each song.

As he sang the fourth song, the earth split apart and water gushed up through the many cracks, causing a flood. By the time the rain stopped, all of the people and nearly all of the animals had drowned. Only Kangi the crow survived.

Kangi pleaded with the Creating Power to make him a new place to rest. So the Creating Power decided the time had come to make his new world. From his huge pipe bag, which contained all types of animals and birds, the Creating Power selected four animals known for their ability to remain under water for a long time. He sent each in turn to retrieve a lump of mud from beneath the flood waters. First the loon dove deep into the dark waters, but it was unable to reach the bottom. The otter, even with its strong webbed feet, also failed. Next, the beaver used its large flat tail to propel itself deep under the water, but it too brought nothing back. Finally, the Creating Power took the turtle from his pipe bag and urged it to bring back some mud.

Turtle stayed under the water for so long that everyone was sure it had drowned. Then, with a splash, the turtle broke the water's surface! Mud filled its feet and claws and the cracks between its upper and lower shells. Singing, the Creating Power shaped the mud in his hands and spread it on the water, where it was just big enough for himself and the crow. He then shook two long eagle wing feathers over the mud until earth spread wide and varied, overcoming the waters. Feeling sadness for the dry land, the Creating Power cried tears that became oceans, streams, and lakes. He named the new land Turtle Continent in honor of the turtle who provided the mud from which it was formed.

The Creating Power then took many animals and birds from his great pipe bag and spread them across the earth. From red, white, black, and yellow earth, he made men and women. The Creating Power gave the people his sacred pipe and told them to live by it. He warned them about the fate of the people who came before them. He promised all would be well if all living things learned to live in harmony. But the world would be destroyed again if they made it bad and ugly.

Yes, I agree, so many comments from people who have not been to a game this season, but every game they make comments on here. I always feel sorry for the players and also our great saviour who bought the club and saved us. Every time I see him I feel so proud and thankful we have such a great man in charge of our great club. We are in save hands, at last.

Maybe if you did not spend so much time on here always picking an argument with everyone, then maybe you could have met him, Freemantle is not that far to the ground is it, I would be devastated that my son had text me to say he was worried and I was too busy on here.

God help us all. I thought It was bad enough that some people need to join a tribe (fans) to gain some sense of belonging. I guess it's that they have no identity of their own? But now it looks like it's becoming some kind of religion (another tribe). You only have to look at the behavior of some of these people to see the "them and us mentality". Monkey see, monkey do.

I thought it was looking good at the 1-1stage then it turned into car crash footy. I also left early to avoid the neanderthal Blues who were cranking themselves up for the inevitable aggro. We may not have had the best team but a better looking fanbase - many of the Pompey Pillocks took their shirts off (Jimmy Five Bellies Tribute Act) and gurning away showing the same number of rotten teeth as their i.q.

Don't agree we were outclassed. Had Waigo and Lallana taken their chances we would have been 2 or 3 goals clear. The only area where Pompey were superior was in their goal taking ability and that was made easy for them when, at 2-1, we went with just 3 at the back and got caught on the break. We may have lost the game but it was a moral victory for us, because they know that the gap between both teams is very little.
so we were out classed then
no
so we were not out classed then. so we won after all

So the ones involved were a minority from both sides, intent on trouble!

I don't think some of these so-called "fans" deserve a say, based on their comments! We played absolutely fantastically today and the score DEFINITELY does not match our performance. For 75-80 minutes, we were the best team on the pitch; we gave 110% effort, we pressed them, and we had plenty of chances. David James had to be Man of the Match (at least in the first half) for keeping Pompey still in it, as we had so many chances to make it a 3-0 or 4-0 result in the first haf alone. The only problem was that we were unable to take our chances, and they did. Whenever we had a set piece, they were able to counter from the cleared ball, and took their chances. Simple as. For people to call our performance a disgrace, it's disgusting! Statistically, we didn't deserve a result, but based on our performance, we AT LEAST deserved a draw! Remember, even though they are in financial troubles, they are a Premier League team.

Overall, I am a pleased, but slightly disappointed Saints fan - only because I feel our performance warranted a result!

If we play like that for the rest of the season, I feel we can make the playoffs, even if the odds are against us!

Firstly I am not a Pompy fan before anyone says it - but I there seems to be a theme running here that Pompy started the rouble today - they didn't. About 70 Saints "fans" got together by Freeborne with a load of ammo which was clearly put there a while ago and began to attack the Pompy fans and Police as they left the stadium, the pompy "fans" retaliated and threw stuff back. I was there and saw this taking place. Very sad state of affairs and gives it a bit of a bad taste as most people were really good natured but typically a minority ruins it for everyone else. Still saints will get the llast laugh when Pompy go down the toilet next week!

It looked as if there was a co-ordinated plan by "morons" from both camps to get involved in some "action", all decent fans from both sides deplore this behaviour and just hope those caught and found guilty should be given life bans from attending any competitive sport, as they are incapable of behaving in a decent manner, plus plenty of unpaid community work to make them think twice about being so stupid.

I suppose that, while Avram Grant was giving his interview ten minutes after the final whistle, it was Saints fans singing 'Pay Up Pompey' in the background?
Was it Saints fans singing 'Pay Up Pompey' as they were leaving the stadium when Pompey's fourth goal went in?
Have you ever wondered why a manager will sometimes watch the first half of a game from the stands?
It is because, from a distance, he can often get a better view of the whole scene than he can from pitch-side.
Sometimes, with the benefit of TV, you can see and hear what is going on a damned sight better than those actually at the event!
With Fareham being between the two cities, it could be said that I have a foot in each camp and can take an objective rather than a biased view!

They were not 3 goals better then us, Lallana's missed header, Rickie header being saved by James, Jiadi's missed header from James fumble, Bernard's stupidity when he should have left it to Lallana, all those missed chances, you can't afford not to put them in the onion bag.

As for the the trouble, it's doesn't matter how well the police planned the operation, the skates were hell bent on causing trouble, there was always going to be flashpoints, but all in all 11 arrests aint bad.

I went to the game at 10am and left for home at 4.30pm, the only time I saw a skate was in the ground.

My only complaints are the police holding back Saints fan so long they missed the start of the game, and the police dog biting people who had been pushed towards it by people frustrated at being held back.

Sad that I call myself 'Linesman'? Do you think that everyone that wanted a ticket for the match was able to get one? Sad that you call yourself 'Brite Spark' when it would appear that you are not very Bright with no Spark of intelligence!
If you were a regular supporter instead of a fair weather - wannabe - groupie fan just when the big games come along, you would have been able to get a ticket. SW less-talk ............. take note!
As I have been to both St Marys and Fratton Park this month, from which club do you think that I would have had a better chance of getting a ticket?
Whilst there are plenty of 'Yah Boo' football followers who cannot see anything other that their team's colours, there are some ADULTS who are able to attend any ground without taking a bigoted attitude!
It is this minority that sometimes have difficulty in getting tickets for certain matches, especially when you do not live near the ground.
If you were what your chosen name would suggest, I would not need to point this fact out to you!

You can't support two teams, ie have one in reserve for when your first choice team is not doing so well. I bet last season you were a Havant and Waterlooville fan, this season Southampton, next season Man City?

It's not bigotry to support one team you buffoon.

Let`s hope that Hampshire Constabulary show the same determination to convict the missile throwing Saints fans as this did against the Pompey fans a few years ago. There must be clear video evidence that the police can use to clearly indentify these thugs . They were able to put the time and resources into this process when prosecuting the Pompey fans so it will be interesting to see their response on this occasion.

My sister and I were at the match, shes 46 I am 47, we have supported the SAINTS since we were one and two. We shouted and screamed for the SAINTS to win, but we would not have caused any trouble. To be honest I didn't see any trouble. Is it another reason for the media to paint every football fan as being violent. GOOD GAME, SHAME WE LOST. COME ON YOU REDS. AND I LOVE RICKY LAMBERT. (although I am old enough to be his mother)
Good on You Both too.

Cheers

Cracking game.. couple of undeserved soft goals at the end.
The England keeper was in good form - saved their bacon for sure
what is it now how many mil on players and still rock bottom of the prem.. nows the time to play for the players... No parachute.
1st March End of Storrie End of Muffs

Meanwhile back at a solvent club on the upwards track...
If Saints can get stuck in every game with that kind of effort there is still a chance of the play-offs albeit it slim.

PS sounds like the police need a nice cup of tea in the chief constables suite...pass the choccie bourbons

Soft goals at the end. A bit like the soft butter that our attack cut so easily through with the precision and accuracy of a surgeon`s knife.

Bring on the Blue Noses. Who knows we might make another Wembley visit in the semis of a proper cup competition.

Yeah what a great thing to rejoice in... Pompy were second best in every fight you numpties had, not a good match or the prospect of Saints getting to the playoffs and Pompy going down but rejoice in the fact the "morons" had to have a fight and ruin it for every other decent fan out there. Crawl back under your stones and leave football to the fans.
It's because of gutless people like you that the Skates think we're a pushover to begin with.

Shut up pikey, that's if you've got a club to support. Red army.

Oh dear ! Touched a raw nerve have I. There was only one Red Army and will only ever be one Red Army . As you are so ill-educated I would suggest that you read about the Eastern Front during the second World War and the heroics of the real Red Army in defending the city of Stalingrad.

PS

I`d rather be a pikey than a scummer !!

So you bet that last season I was a Havant and Waterlooville fan!

Well, it is said that a fool and their money is soon parted, and if that is the sort of bet that you would make, you are certainly not bright and must be skint.

Congratulations on knowing that it is not bigotry to support one team.
At no time have I ever said that I have supported any team. I have stated that I have visited both St Marys and Fratton Park. Why, because I enjoy watching football.
By watching different teams, so you appreciate different styles of play, formations and tactics.
There are morons who cannot understand that. It confuses them if they watch a match and do not see familiar faces on the pitch wearing familiar shirts with a sponsor's name on it that they recognise!
Usually, not very bright, with no spark of intelligence, usually considered to be buffoons!

The only thing thats really starting to get annoying is people moaning about security allowing a banned supporter in the stadium!
He had his ban lifted within a month of getting it after appeal.
The stewards were all informed of his presence and seat number before the game began.
He was allowed in the stadium and from what I saw did nothing wrong, taunted a few times but who didnt.

I agree with all comments about letting the fans fight, why waste council tax payers money, theyre going to fight anyways, let them do it for free.

It was very much a 'co-ordinated' effort. Organised hooliganism is seeing a dramatic rise recently.

Gutless... I'm not the ones who had to hide behind a Police line to throw things at passers by who weren't even the Pompy "fans" down for a fight. I'm not the ones who threw a brick at a 60 year old Saints fan and hit him in the head - quality fan you are. You had to wait unti the real firm, the 657 crew were a bit older as you couldn't face them in their prime and you till have to hide behind Plod when you try it on... And you think your tough!?!?! Please!
