A DRIVER who killed a promising Olympic diver has been jailed for five years.

Lukasz Banasik, 26, was driving almost 20 miles over the 30 mile an hour speed limit when he hit Gavin Hustler-Brown as he crossed the road after a night out in Southampton.

The 22-year-old criminology student was studying at Southampton Solent University, was flung into the air when he was hit by a Vauxhall Astra being driven dangerously by Banasik.

Southampton Crown Court heard how Banasik and three friends had bought the vehicle just a week before the fatal crash for just £100. He didn't have a driving license in the UK or his native Poland and the vehicle was not insured.

He then fled the country following the crash that happened on April 27, 2007. He was only finally captured in July last year when he was held by Polish police over a separate matter.

Banasik pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license or insurance, failing to stop and report an accident.

Jailing him Judge Derwin Hope said told that he had "substantially prolonged the agony that family and friends have had to go through."

A tarif of 5 years does seem lenient when he absconded and fully intended not to return to this country to face justice, and was driving a vehicle without Insurance etc and since he was driving in such manner caused a death, surely this is almost murder...and only 5 years. Why doesnt the ordinary person have any respect for the judiciary; I wonder...

There clearly needs to be a system for immigrants who want to live and drive on our roads and one that needs to be global also.

A series of tests before getting a uk licence, then over a period of x amount of years they must retake their test and confirm vehicle registration, mot and insurance.

Some may say this needs to be added for young drivers also and I agree but more so for immigrants who come over here and cannot read or speak english but still drive on our highways

9 times out 10 foreign nationals are deported once their sentence is finished, however this was not ordered by the judge, also he was also given a 5 year driving ban, so I fear he will be able to remain in the UK, once he has served his 2.5 years in prison, this sentence is far to lenient 10 years and deported would have been better

Your so wrong, one person said she drove through a red light, others said she didn't, the jury have to be 100% ceratin , if not they must aquit.

Hamphire may be wrong about the particular circumstances but generally is correct. My Grandad got run over and killed by a drink driver. He got a 2 year ban and a £200.00 fine. I guess as he was old and the fact that he didn't drive off made it ok though eh??

Put him in the middle of a road and just drive the car at him that's what he deserves,he'll only serve about two and a half years then he'll be back on the road without any insurance etc, they never learn people like him.The poor victim's family have got a life sentence. As the police say if you want to get away with murder then use a car.
