Swindon Town and Southampton fans arrested after trouble near St. Mary's Stadium

DETECTIVES are investigating after a fight broke out resulting in the arrests of 14 fans moments before last night's match between Southampton and Swindon.

Trouble flared outside a pub in St Mary's Street between a big crowd of supporters, spilling in to nearby Jonas Nichols Square just 15 minutes before kick-off.

Two Saints fans were arrested at the scene and taken to a nearby police station.

A contingent of Swindon supporters were then escorted on the short walk to St Mary's Stadium, but were also arrested and detained by police before they were allowed inside the ground.

All 14 people were held in police cells overnight and were this morning expected to be interviewed by police leading the investigation.

It's believed officers are examining CCTV footage and images to establish exactly what happened near the Plume and Feathers pub around 7.30pm.

Police were also called following reports of a man who had been stabbed in the same area at around the same time as the fracas, but it is not thought to be linked to the football related violence.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the trouble is asked to call Shirley CID on 101 and ask for the Operation Billet team.

It's such a shame that some Southampton fans have become violent. We used to be such a safe club for families. Come on Saints fans - take the rough with the smooth and don't lose your heads. COYR!

"Yooof"
"Yawn" more like...thinking they're big men by putting up hoods and getting together in numbers to try and intimidate single groups of people. Nothing more than jumped up chavs trying to be hard when in fact a tuesday night kick-off is well past your bedtime.

With what they appear to be grabbing in the scrum, I would hardly describe watching that is something that a gentleman would want to watch!
Or at least, only a certain type of 'gentleman'!

Nothing new there then. Away supporters go out looking for bother and Saints fans get arrested when it all kicks off.

Drastic action needs to be taken against so-called football fans who are simply thugs.

Tie them to deck chairs and make them watch a five-day cricket international match while consuming curled -up cheese and cucumber sandwiches and downing tepid tea.

Did the Swindon lot come tooled up with their pitchforks? Surely the so called Police spotters who were out in force at the P****y match could had seen this coming?

I don't think hooliganism has become a problem at Saints for any other reason than some away fans now come to start trouble (ie go to areas full of home fans and start mouthing off). That didn't happen (generally) in the Premier League because thugs couldn't afford to travel and get in to the games.
These people are not organised hooligans - just the same idiots who get in trouble on a night out. They can't handle their drink and will, more than likely, be the sort of lunatic who gets involved in a fight outside the ground then stands around while the police take a clear picture of them to put in the paper.

Good grief, how could you suggest that. Isn't that vile method of torture against the Geneva Convention?
Wait a minute, that only applies to prisoners of war, OK, carry on then.

Football hooliganism has been round for nearly 40 years now, and anyone who is surprised by it needs a reality check. Its always been there, even in the premiership it was there, just we couldn't see it, its the problem that the FA try to hide from everyone else, the shame of football that everyone overlooks.
.
The lower leagues are not too different from the top division clubs, the only difference is that the top clubs price out the hooligans, but lest we forget, they also price out the families (another shame in english football).
.
The FA are very keen to rid the premiership of crowd troubles and bad press, its why portsmouth have gained such support and publicity from the FA (and got away with fraud), they dont want the world to see the premiership being any less than a superleague.
.
With that in mind, what about the football league? the world pays as much attention to league 1 and 2 as we do to the italian Serie C (none), so why would the FA highlight the problem to the world and spend millions trying to change it, when they can hide it under a money carpet? .
.
One last point, this whole ''southampton are victims'' and laying the blame with every team that face us, Millwall fans blame everyone else as well, so do Leeds fans.. im sure we werent 100% responsible, but were not blameless, and there is a fraction of Saints that are Sinners, just like every club on the planet.

You may end up getting 'posh' football hooligans, now that really would be a bad sequel to 'Green street'.
