1:00pm Wednesday 21st July 2010 in Crime
By Tara Russell, News Reporter
THIS morning police officers were standing guard at the scene where the grim discovery of a man's body was made.
The body was found lying in a stream by a dog walker in woodland in the Coxford area of Southampton last night.
Detectives were called to the scene at the popular cut through that leads from Springford Road Allotments to the back of Coxford Road following the gruesome discovery early yesterday evening.
Police said it is not yet clear whether the death is suspicious and are awaiting the results of a post mortem that is being carried out later today.
It is understood the body had been there for some time.
This morning around half a dozen uniformed officers were manning a cordon around the area where the body was discovered. A boardwalk running along the stream was sealed off.
The picturesque walkway is popular with dog walkers and just 100 metres from a children's play area.
Police investigating the discovery said they hoped to release more information following the post mortem examination.
Detective Chief Inspector , said: " If anyone can help with our inquiries I would urge them to contact us."
Coxford ward councillor Don Thomas said: "I’m a regular walker down through there. It’s a tragedy that something like this is found on our doorsteps.
"If anybody has got any information they should contact the police without delay to help them get to the bottom of this."
If anyone has any information relating to the incident they should call the Operation Savannah Investigation Team on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

R.I.P the man who died. i hope that if this is a murder the police catch the person/people that did this, as he was someboby's son, father, brother. I lived in Jesmine Road Shirley Warren for 4 years and could not wait to get out, but then moved to Millbronx (Millbrook) and had the same trouble with kids there, my daughter was put in hospital with a suspected fractured skull just because she would not join a gang. and my other children were to scared to go out alone. what is this country coming to. Why are the police to scared to go to these areas? they need to be given more powers.

Because crime doesnt happen on a daily basis up here in Cumbria! Because on the whole (with one or two exceptions) a copper can go into a village and have a cuppa with the locals and come out knowing his car wont be on its roof! Shilrey Warren/Coxford (the name they give to the same area when they dont want people to know they are in the warren/ estate agents dont want people to realise what a scummy hovell it is) has rapidly declined over the last 20 years as good familys move out, and ASBO families move into a place where no one else wants to go. It says alot when police and victim support wont go into an area!

Not really a suprise the estate of shirley warren/coxford is brought up on drugs and hate. Even if this turns out to be a "suspicous" police are scared to go on to the estate and always have been,In this case its more then likely to be a fight or attack gone wrong considering the "stream" is where all the local hooligans stand and cause unesscary nuisance. Deepest thoughts going out to the mans family R.I.P, As for the police southampton is full of nuisance teenagers start putting the real criminals down instead of ones who nick a 79p packet of jaffa cakes !!!!!!

In my opinion nobody has the right to make assumptions like this about something nobody knows the facts about!! Tuna man when was the last time you walked through Shirley Warren? By the sounds of it a very long time ago? You say the police are scared to come to the area? We cannot comfort him, make him well again, hold his hand or kiss him goodbye. He will never have the chance to fulfil his heartfelt wish to be a husband and father. He will never know the joys and sorrows of parenthood, nor, thankfully, suffer the pain of losing his own child. Thank you Sapper 121, AJT and DT2 for your comforting and respectful comments. I will always remember them when I think of my son.
I am sure we have all read stories such as this, seen them on the news and heard them on the radio. We must have all wondered at some time what it must be like to receive news like this and what the families must be going through. AJT is my daughter and I had to tell her and her mum, who is the cousin of this man,s mother, the news. To say they are devistated is an understatement. There are some things in life I wish I would never have to experience, I now know what it is like. Apart from telling my wife her mum had died this is the worst thing I have had to do. I knew him and he was a really nice lad who go on well with both my daughters, my wife thought the world of him. He was not perfect, but who is, but he was a decent lad with a heart of gold. I do not know why people have to comment without knowing him, knowing the facts and without considering the consequences of their comments and the effect it will have on the families. All I can say is I would not wish it on anyone, including those who have made these hurtful comments. People should think before they comment. Once your comment has been made for you it is over and you have had your moment of fame, for the family it is just beginning and there will be a lot more heartache and sorrow before this is over. Sapper could I ask you to contact your ex and ask her for our contact number, we are in Norfolk so she should know who you mean. When the police report is revealed there will be a lot of humble pie being eaten in and around Southampton. As a foot note I was born in Southampton and I am ashamed at the comments some of you have made.
