Yobs catapult ducks to death at beauty spot

Yobs catapult ducks to death at beauty spot Yobs catapult ducks to death at beauty spot

HEARTLESS yobs used catapults to kill and maim ducklings at a Hampshire beauty spot.

The gang of young thugs used the mallards as “target practice”

while trespassing on a nature reserve at Furzedown Farm in Hythe.

Deryk Noble, who owns the land with his six children, saw the teenagers firing lead pellets at the defenceless creatures from just yards away.

Some of the baby ducks were dead when he arrived at the scene, off Frost Lane. One had a broken leg and another had its insides hanging out and had to be put down by a vet.

After chasing the yobs off, he rushed to call police – only to find the youths had returned in greater numbers just 45 minutes later for a second cruel assault.

Deryk’s son Martin stood up to them and they fled.

The sick act sparked outrage on social networking site Facebook, with residents in the Hythe and Waterside area urging the community to work together to find the “vile individuals”.

One popular idea is for residents to pay £10 towards a reward fund for information leading to the conviction of those responsible.

One resident posted that if 100 people “are sickened by this act”

and want to pay £10, £1,000 could be raised, encouraging someone to name the “scumbags”

involved.

Martin Noble has thanked the community for their support and is backing the call for a reward to catch the culprits.

He said: “All the Nobles are behind this as I’m sure half of Hythe are now. I’ve just been to check the remaining ducklings and two have broken legs.

“We are looking after them, hopefully they will make it back to health. We need to find all those responsible. There are roughly eight who had a part in it.”

Martin’s sister Lucy, 37, said: “My dad had been so excited to show the ducks to his first granddaughter who is visiting this weekend for his birthday.

Target practice “He saw them using the ducks as target practice.

“Why do some young people today think it is OK to do this sort of thing? We just find it unbelievable anybody would want to do this.”

The conservation area is well known in the New Forest and features a wide range of wildlife and plants.

Police were called shortly after the incident, on Thursday at 5.40pm, and have launched an appeal for witnesses.

A spokesman said four male and two female teenagers, all wearing caps and tracksuits, were involved in the catapult attack.

Three of the ducks were killed in the rampage.

A number of people were stopped and searched in the area in the hours that followed – but no weapons were recovered and no arrests have been made.

Anyone who witnessed the attack should contact PC Heather Barrow at Hythe police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A lovely idea but the sandal wearing do gooders will argue its against their human rights.

One day there will be a big backlash against the do gooders after all it's them that has allowed these yobs to act this way. No cane in school, no discipline from parents and a feeling of "I can't be touched by society, no matter what I do"

One day common sense will come back and the courts will be allowed to hand down justice again...... hopefully sooner rather than later.

As for the yobs that did this I hope they woke up this morning running scared its hit the papers!

When and if the morons are finely caught they should get 1000 hours community service going round all the ponds and lakes cleaning up litter picking, dogs mess, pond weeding all those horrible jobs we volunteers get stuck into by the end they just might of seen sence that what they did was totally unacceptable in any area let alone a conservation area and for those that say 1000 hours is too much well that what we as volunteers put in to clear up the mess of morons.

Is throwing rotten food at people in stocks any less uncivilised than catpulting ducks?!? Bringing back the stocks is a ridiculous idea- not because I`m a " sandal wearing do gooder" but because I`m not really keen on returning to the middle ages. How about bringing back witch dunking, bubonic plague and jousting? Ironically, if I did live in the middle ages and popped off to the town square for spot of stock watching i suppose I`d more than likely be wearing sandals like all my other fellow peasants?

Hate to point out the bleeding obvious but if as you state it's down to parenting (and I do agree) then it must be more than one generation at fault. This is supported by your "many kids have grown up not respecting anything and the parents are just as bad" so which generation are you having a go at, yours by any chance?

Some sadistic but, in all likelihood, emotionally damaged fools shoot some ducks and the good people of Southampton have written to the Echo suggesting such over the top punishments as: the stocks, sending them to Afghanistan to be shot at by religous fanatics, not urinating on them if they were on fire etc etc.

Yet on the other hand, a few weeks ago the king of Spain was in the papers standing next to a dead elephant which he'd just shot through the head. It would be harder to think of a more sadistic act of animal cruelty than that.Where was the moral indignation of the nation at this?!!? Maybe because that wasn't mentioned in the Echo? I'm sure if you asked all those on here who are appalled by this duck story, they would say they were equally appalled by the actions of the King of Spain. How can you say it's hypocrisy when you don't know their views on both stories?
Regarding the story currently being discussed, I would suggest putting the youths responsible in the lion enclosure at Marwell for a day - sadistic killing of animals is the first step towards other sadistic acts, and they need to be stopped.
As far as 'Rightway' saying 'They're only ducks', this is the sort of dismissive comment which really helps promote the seemingly general disregard for animal welfare. I intervened to tell a boy off once when I saw him drop-kick a crab. His father came out with a similar line: 'It's only a crab'. If I had kicked his dog, would he accept my defense of 'It's only your dog'? No.

Perhaps you should value their life because if you don't, you're really not too different from them. You can't really condemn someone for not valuing the life of another and then go on to do the same thing.
Haven't you missed the point, George ? Proper would willingly p*ss on decent people who were on fire, but not on nasty ones. As Proper clearly points out, some people's lives are of no value.

Taking an overall look at life, the human race is not very good at managing its affairs or keeping its house in order. And that's because there seems to be two sides to everything : the duality of life, and the never-ending battle between Good and Evil.
Here's a piece of information that might shock you: Just because I do not agree with something, does not mean I do not undersand it. It's not really your place to tell me whose lives I should value and whose I shouldn't.
George......I am not stupid.

I did not TELL you to think or do anything, because, as you quite rightly say, it is no ones place to tell you what to think.

I asked a QUESTION : "Haven't you missed the point....?" It appeared to me that you might have, which is implicit in the choice of "Haven't" rather than "Have", but I might have been wrong. I was seeking clarification.

I find the vast majority of the "Georgem" posts of great interest, and often most thought-provoking, and I respect them. So I am somewhat taken aback at the tone of your reply.

Always makes me laugh how somebodies comment of their opinion always ends up into a personnal slanging match and insults usually involving calling somebody "stupid", "il informed" "Bigoted", a load of balony was a good one the other day.

I am puzzled!
This is a very emotive subject - but is it ILLEGAL to cull ducks?

Ive checked the remaining ducklings today & the ducklings with broken legs are really struggling.

The police haven't been very helpful though. Im the one who chased the youths off from the scene so know what some of them look like!
The Police haven't even ask me for a description!

Norman Bareham our local Community Safety Officer has been absolutely excellent in helping trying to catch the offenders, I can't thank him enough for what he's doing!

Have you noticed it's always the same people who begin the "stirring" by throwing in a red herring, or something provocative ? I used to do it for a bit of fun, but I have seen how it can cause unintended mayhem, so I don't do it anymore. But watch out for the usual ones : Stillness, Lone Ranger, the subtle but cunning Rightway.....one or two others - can't think of them now. They always deliberately orchestrate trouble, and pick on those who don't know about them. I'm fairly convinced they are intelligent teenagers who enjoy the manipulative matchplay. But who knows ? One thing's for sure : now their strings have been pulled, the puppets will dance ! Oh ! Nearly forgot old "one-liner" Mick ! Like a well-trained parrot, he'll say "Dik, do one" for us ! He got up at half-past two this morning just to say that ! Check the time on his post.

If in doubt phone RSPCA and ask for their advice. 0300 1234 999 is the 24 hour emergency cruelty line. 0300 1234 555 is the 9 til 5 general advice line.

Sorry to offend, Billy, just a bit odd that you thought I'd missed the point. It's a common theme in Internet discussions that people assume if you don't agree with them, it's because you haven't understood whatever it is they're telling you.

I know it is massively off topic but..

Small household firearms should be legal and encouraged. Would stop so much localised anti-social behaviour by peoples houses.

Little kids wouldn't be so keen on coming to kill someones ducklings if they were protected. I'm not advocating violence, but there needs to be a certain protective element to deter intruders. They can't be stopped nowadays, any action by the land owner to stop them immediately results in a law suit against the land owner.

Don’t you lot think that locking kids up for the rest of their lives or castrating them is just a tad over the top because they killed a couple of ducks, cruel yes, but not a hanging offence. Where are all these firebrands offering rewards when an OAP gets attacked for their pension, or when the Duke of Edinburgh and his gang kill or main thousands of our feathered friends. I think some on here should try to keep things a little more in prospective. After all they’re only ducks.
What I find disturbing is the distinctly sexual undertones to a lot of the punishments these simpletons dream up.
ONLY DUCKS well thats ok then i guess for Tw@s to go around killing ducks for a so called laugh huh!! in two words your basicly saying its all right! If I see them i would of broken there legs and see how they liked it and if they still found it funny!, thats the trouble with good old politicaly correct Britain. whats going to happen to them ?? jack S**T thats what!, A slap on the wrist! maybe if the punishment for just killing some ducks was a little more serious they wouldnt do it in the first place ! look at the picture you have to be sick to do something like that even if you are a kid the thought never entered my head when i was a kid give em ten years they will be robbing your house then your want the little tw@s locked up with the key thrown away! bit over the top for just robbing your house isnt it ?? In singapore the crime rate is good as ZERO! you know why ? because you still get 6 lashes of the cane even for grafitie you pass out after 3! hence low crime rate because everyone thinks S*D that, its just Europe that has no balls to punish people and thats why we have tw@s do things like this start of small with JUST KILLING A FEW DUCKS (your words not mine) THEN END UP ROBBING YA HOUSE or rapping ya daughter!

If this was adults hunting foxes or shooting Squirrels there would be an uproar but some youths shooting ducklings gets jokes?
Why not round these youths up put them in stocks & have people throwing things at them from every angle maybe have some with catapults then see if they find it to be fun

No, it's not their style.

Far more likely are the children of quite wealthy families who do not supervise their kids adequately, or, conversely, organise their day to the point of suffocation.

Kids at Hardley School or Applemore will know who did it by now.

Mouths shut, ears open. Play the waiting game, and somebody will say something sooner or later.
Some years ago three brats from the Zoo were arrested for killing ducks in another nearby nature reserve but I expect that was a one-off. Sadly the Lymington Times couldn't name them because they were under age. I wouldn't fall off my stool with shock if the latest killings were carried out by zoo-ers!
