Two years for ‘gardener’ in cannabis raid

Toan Phung Toan Phung

A CANNABIS “gardener” has been jailed after being caught red-handed during a police drugs bust at a house that was packed with £64,000 worth of the drug.

Toan Phung was found hiding in the loft of the house in Whyteways, Boyatt Wood, which had been transformed into a “sophisticated” cannabis factory containing more than 300 mature plants.

Southampton Crown Court heard how officers raided the Eastleigh property last month and found the floors of eight rooms, including the loft, packed with cannabis plants.

In total 307 plants were found in the three-bedroom semi-detached home. If sold on the street, the drugs would have a value of around £64,000. Police described there being an “overwhelming” smell of cannabis in the house and that only the kitchen, where Phung slept on a mattress on the floor, and the toilet didn’t contain any plants.

Prosecutor Rachael Robertson told the court that the 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Vietnam was deemed to be the gardener of the plants and that lighting equipment was found hanging low across each room.

In mitigation Keely Harvey told the court that Phung, who had been living at the address for six months, had been exploited and had travelled to England three years ago to earn money for his family, who were struggling to make ends meet in Vietnam.

She added: “His involvement is through exploitation and there is an element of naivete in that as well.

“He has no influence on those above him in the chain and he certainly doesn’t know if they own other properties.

“His life was essentially living on a mattress on a floor. It was no life at all.”

Phung pleaded guilty to the charge of producing a quantity of cannabis and Judge Derwin Hope sentenced him to two years in prison for his part in the “sophisticated cannabis operation”.

How is a drug raid any different from Attila and the Huns attacking a peaceful city-state to take people prisoner and loot their homes?

Doesn't hurt anyone, and is much less socially damaging than alcohol.

There is no mention in this report if the police, immigration, or prison authorities in this country have liaised with the Vietnamese authorities regarding Toan Phungs' impoverished familys' welfare back home, as they will be suffering unsupported for the next two years until he is free to start earning again and pay off his debt to the kind smuggling gang who found him some employment, and before he can continue supporting them again in turn. I just hope the prison welfare staff will help him with all the support he will be in need of.
Also incidentally, if he had been able to continue in his chosen career without the authorities interference he would have probably continued to use the services of money transfer agencies e.g. Western Union, to send money to his family, like so many immigrants, legal and illegal, do, and thus helping keep those agencies employees in employment, and therefore helping with the economy of this country.

The war on drugs is surprisingly similar to the war on terror. Invading poor countries to get terrorists, Invading poor estates to get dealers. Destroy homes, confiscate property and jail families of terror suspects. Destroy homes, confiscate property and jail families of Drug suspects. Both accidentally kill and imprison thousands of innocent people. Both ignore underlining causes, both waste billions of pounds, both are a fail.

I dislike drug dealers and children using drugs or becoming enticed by gangsterism, so i say NO to prohibition and NOW to legal regulation.

Quick, show me an example of a home being destroyed, or families of drug suspects being imprisoned as a result of a drug raid in the UK.

Quick? LOL

Lets talk about how medicinal cannabis users have there houses raided, property either destroyed or confiscated for growing a plant safer than alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical drugs. How they are torn away from their friends and family, their life blighted by getting arrested, criminal record, or by being jailed. While real criminals roam as police focus energy on grow ops, in a futile attempt to deliver a blow to organized crime. Yes, when I was comparing the war on drugs to the war on terror, i was speaking in generalities. Do you know what happens in places like Mexico? Simply because of the drug policy. Even in the UK, this unjust law and ridiculous drug policy is causing way more harm than good. Cannabis isnt harmless, but dont fool yourself into believing its legality is associated with its harms. As its the safest drug on this planet..So while prohibition exists, kids will still find cannabis easier to obtain than alcohol and tobacco, dealers will still get richer and richer, people using cannabis for medicinal or recreational purposes become victims. You dont have to like cannabis, or even care one way or another about the plant itself. But you must understand the dangers of prohibition cause more harm than cannabis ever could. Or have I wasted my time on a prohibitionist?

..But most users don’t use it for medicinal purposes; unfortunately cannabis (yes like alcohol) gets misused by many people and end up having expensive psychiatric treatment on the N.H.S which I as a taxpayer resent.
I say well done to the Police for catching Toan Phung and hope they catch many more like him.
