Police to crackdown on Hampshire's bad drivers (From Daily Echo)

Getting near Xmas and the Police need extra funds for their Xmas do.

Hopefully they will do something about all the poor "Professional Drivers as well"
The amount of accidents I've Narrowly Avoided due to the poor driving standards of Southampton's "Professional drivers" is disgusting! I may be a young driver but I know what a give way line is and safe convenient locations are!

Oh Would also be nice to see the Police lead by example. The amount I laughed when I saw a Police officer speeding to over take me on a personal mobile (without the emergency lights on)

How do you know it was a personal mobile?

This should be done 365 days of the year. Fines need to be higher and people seen using their mobiles behind the wheel should have them conviscated until fine paid or they re-take a theory test.

Not wearing a seatbelt doesn't effect your ability to control a car, just reduces deaths and keeps roads open longer after an accident.

How do you know it was a personal mobile?

Well I cant prove it was a personal mobile, However I can assure you it wasn't a Police radio which would have been acceptable, and Even if it was a work Mobile its still as illegal as a personal mobile no matter what your profession is.

Yep agree especially those who think its perfectly acceptable to drive along at 40 in a 30 as if the speed limit is just a suggestion. Also - those big fat drivers who have one hand on the wheel and the other round something made by ginsters.
Speeding, using phone etc - should be an automatic ban - driving without insurance - jail and car crushed - that may help.
Last one - any person caught adding an extra large exhaust, spoiler, cheap tinted windows, drug dealer stereo, carlos fandango wheels should be shot as they have some seriously worrying issues.

it's just a pity that being inconsiderate is not an offence, otherwise we could lock up all the lorry drivers for those endless "elephant races" on the A34....they seem to forget that we are business drivers too and we also have schedules to keep..

Target the tailgaters as well. Castle Malwood Hill near the end of the M27 and on the A31 in Ringwood is prime hunting ground for these idiots. A crash quickly causes long delays for thousands of motorists.

I agree general driving standards have fallen and the law needs to be enforced to keep all road user's safe.
I believe however that the police need to lead by example. Why is it that you can see an articulated lorry with trailer indicate left on a roundabout but the police car driver can not be bothered to indicate at all when there are other road user's who would benefit. Years ago you would see a police officer driving with two hands on the steering wheel now it often one arm on the window sill with that hand steering and the other hand resting on the gear knob. You can see police officer's driving with their head cocked to one side talking into their radio using one hand to operate it whilst other police officer's in the vehicle aren't using theirs, surly the safest way is let the passengers use their radio and the driver concentrate on driving.
Many police officer's do not wear seatbelts this sets a bad example. they often park up on the pavement when it is safe to park normally on the road as other vehicles do. When I have approached police officer's to ask about these infringements they come out with the most ridiculous excuses like the two police officer's who parked in the last available parent space at a supermarket despite there being lots of empty general spaces all around. Their excuse was that they often get called to deal with teenagers and they are children so therefore the police can use that space. They then went into the shop and came out a few minutes later with cans of drink and sandwiches and drove off with no seatbelts on.
By all means punish unsafe drivers but the police should set a high standard themselves as they use to.

Why give details about where the police are targeting? Don't give any warning - just catch the b*stards and throw the book at them.
Finding bad drivers in Hampshire is like catching fish in a barrel.

you need to get a few more generalisations in there...

I am pleased to see that the M3 that I use regularly will finally be policed. I rarely see police vehicles in the Hampshire bit of the motorway. As one of the faster drivers, usually following some one in the outside lane at 'about' 70 mph I am too often appalled by idiots cutting through the other two lanes to undertake then cutting out infront of a vehicle in the outside lane at too close a distance forcing the innocent driver to brake. It is because of these morons that some drivers tailgate in the outside lane in order to stop the undertakers getting out in front of them. This is a recipe for disaster. Hopefully the police will take action against the undertakers, before they cause someone to need the services of the professional undertakers.

I have seen a similar incident to the above from the Police, at bottom of Shirley Rd, Police on a mobile phone, no emergency lights, no indicators, one handed on the wheel performing a U-Turn around the roundabout, causing traffice at junctions to break hard. Poor driving, poor disciplines, poor example.

A27 - Kanes Hill, Hand held camera near crossing, be aware as you come off roundabout towards Bursledon – the Police hid behind the bush in bright fluorescent jacket, as you pass this point on the crossing, it catches the corner of your eye, makes you think someone is running or cycling out at the crossing and have seen motorists swerve towards other side of the road in panic and/or accelerate to move out of way. Not well thought out at all from Hampshire Police.
Also on the accidents involving cyclists, I am a cyclist and see far too many red lights jumped and bad behaviour but also I have seen many drivers not paying attention and cyclists knocked off due to poor driving or 'racing' away from junctions and paying no attention to the conditions or people around them. For me it is another quick stamp down, put it in the paper make people think for a week or two.

they could catch more if they set up checks around the schools during the run times and also the ones who seem to think 20 mph is better on a 50 mph road which is sometimes worse than driving at 60

Crackdown in Shirley.People ignoring NO RIGHT TURN or GOING IN BUS LANES. I have just gone out and one persistent offender has done it again. AU56 YLN turning into SYDNEY ROAD from ROMSEY ROAD.

Hmm cool, my pet hate = drivers that go over the middle line to overtake a parked car, in to oncoming traffic, without waiting for an appropriate moment.

Driving safely is easy and fun. Just do it. Hazards and mistakes occur often – expect them and manage them safely. And for those having a pop at the cops - I have driven about one million miles so far, have seen thousands of police cars on the roads and have the highest regard for their driving. Traffic incidents would practically vanish overnight if all vehicles were controlled with the same care as the police employ.

My pop was more at those taxi drivers to be honest, but the police incidents I have seen amuses me, I'm not saying I 100% follow the laws of the road, but I'm not the one enforcing the Law. You cant tell someone not to do something you do yourself.

Like an idiot yesterday when I was cycling home in the dark, I was well lit, bright yellow bag cover, sat in traffic with a strong position and this car tries pushing past me even though another car was a foot in front of me and stood still, out of concern they might try pushing me off I sadly had to tailgate the car in front to keep the idiot behind me as he also tried pulling away at the same time as me, not like he was going to get anywhere faster because the traffic was backed up from bitterne rail station all the way into six dials, they couldn't use the excuse that they didn't see me either, if they didn't then they wouldn't have tried overtaking with nowhere to go, they'd have hit me instead, also I got cut up by a white van man at six dials and an arse in a 1 series either didn't look before turning down hinkler road or was distracted because I'm sure that if they were looking or saw me, they would have noticed a steady light and a flashing one on my helmet along with a steady light on my bars, I also know that I was easy to see since a driver was patient and didn't push past when going through a pinch point but I also agree that something should be done about pavement cyclists, ninjas in training(unlit riders), salmon cyclists and RLJ cyclists, in London they've started handing silly cyclists £30 Fixed Penalty Notices for jumping lights and stuff, speaking of salmon, I saw one cyclist riding the wrong way on the worst possible road to do it on, Going over the itchen bridge, I saw it and thought "How the hell is that guy still alive" but police need to lead by example and crack down on ALL dodgy road users. If you want to see one of your fraternity behaving normally watch the local BBC news this evening and enjoy the article on the closure of the dangerous railway crossing near Chichester, particularly the gentleman on the bicycle as he blatantly ignores the safety sign that reads CYCLISTS DISMOUNT. YouTube can be selective but there's no doubt this shows the whole unexpurgated incident.

Yes,target bad driving, that also includes tailgating, undertaking, driving with the front fog lights on all the time(why do you do it you fools?).

Drivers who hog the middle lane, its for overtaking you numpties, get back into lane 1.

I'd suggest they walk not in uniform down Lance's Hill noting number plate's, then pull the lot a bit further down the road, they'd catch loads of mobile users during the morning rush hour that way. Though general inattention is also a problem, like the 'woman of colour' who was more interested in reading than driving down there the other day, she almost took one of the emergency bikers off who was slowly filtering, dunno what he said to her but she looked most indignant when he spoke to her...

and the numpty on the windhover roundabout who everymorning at 6 .55 drives in the left hand lane and goes right on the roundabout to join the m27 what a t**t

Don't forget speeders, I've gone down there many times on my bike at 30 to 35mph and people were still overtaking me.

To go right at Windhover you should start off in the right hand most lane don't you and then start to change lanes safely 2 exits before you get to your exit, like the first of the 2 you change to the middle lane and then the second one you change to the left most one so you're ready to take your exit, I think, is that about right?
