Sharp rise in county gun crime

GUN crime in Hampshire soared by nearly 50 per cent in 12 months, according to latest Government figures.

They show the number of firearm offences, excluding air rifles, rose from 85 to 122 in the year to March 2007.

The county's increase bucked the national trend of a decline in gun crime over the same period.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said most of the offences - 79 out of 122 - involved imitation weapons, such as BB guns.

Forty involved real guns, two tasers and one CS spray. A further 32 incidents, not counted in the main tally, involved air weapons where there was an actual or perceived threat of violence.

Last July the force launched a campaign to rid the streets of imitation firearms and to teach young people about the risks of carrying them.

Insp Elliot Brown, who leads the Tactical Firearms Support Unit, said: "Hundreds of hours of police time are wasted every month responding to such incidents, but even more important than that, youngsters who carry such items put themselves in real danger of being confronted by armed police and the consequences that may bring."

The success of the campaign, which started after the period covered by the latest figures, will not be known until later this year, but a force spokesman said early anecdotal evidence pointed to a 30 per cent reduction in incidents.

''Last July the force launched a campaign to rid the streets of imitation firearms and to teach young people about the risks of carrying them''

That campaign works then!!

''The success of the campaign, which started after the period covered by the latest figures, will not be known until later this year''

What success?

Seems to me the police are losing the battle against all crime. Not strictly their fault as their hands appear to be tied by pathetic government legislation, human rights act and the poor judiciary service.
Until that is overhauled in the favour of the victim, things will only get worse.

Most of the 'gun crimes' are in gang vs. gang incidents. So long as decent, innocent folk aren't being hurt we should let them get on with it - natural culling if you like.

Focus on the incidents that affect the taxpaying public, not the criminals who don't deserve our protection.

And murder, burglary, rape, robbery are all illegal. Did that stop them?

The real problems are non-contributors producing idiot offspring whose only real fear is of hard work or not being able to get served with alcohol at the local shop.

So why were law-abiding people prevented from owning guns - if the only result is that criminals can carry guns?

because it is really easy to police/monitor and gives the idea that the government are trying to tackle crime.
All they succeed in doing, as usual, is penalise the law abiding.

Well, that is indeed the question, isn't it. I have no idea. I was just pointing out to you that banning something doesn't stop it dead

What stuff? Crime? Measures to prevent crime? Debates about crime? Your post is not only tiresome and predictable, it's also far too ambiguous to be of any actual worth. Nice one
