E-fit image of vicious attacker

POLICE have released the image of a man they want to speak to after a pregnant woman was punched in the face during an attempted robbery in Southampton.

The victim, 38, was outside Esgros in Claremont Road, Regent's Park when a man got out of a blue BMW and tried to grab her handbag.

She refused to let go of the bag and during the struggle the man punched her on the back of the head and then twice in the face.

The woman, who had only just found out she was pregnant, lost a tooth and suffered bruising to her face.

The attacker got back into the passenger side of the BMW, empty-handed, and the car sped off down Regent's Park Road, in the direction of Shirley High Street.

Officers investigating the case have released this e-fit image to help jog the memories of potential witnesses to the attack.

He is described as white, aged in his mid to late 30s, around 6ft 3in with a slim-medium build.

He had fair or dark hair and had a piercing in his bottom lip. He was wearing jeans, Caterpillar-style boots, a jacket and a shirt.

Any witnesses to the attack, which happened at around 11.15am on Monday, February 18, are asked to contact police on 0845 045 4545.

A 22-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a robbery and have been bailed until April 22.
