Project to save toad population
TOAD lovers are preparing
for the forthcoming rescue
mission to save the amphibians
from being squashed
on Hampshire roads.
Volunteers are being
sought to help with the toad
patrols at key crossing
points.
Every year hundreds are
killed as they move from
their hibernation sites to the
breeding grounds.
Among the hotspots are
Hensting Lane, Colden
Common; at Avington, near
Alresford; Drove Lane,
Alresford, and at Cheriton.
Jon Cranfield, pictured
above, is helping to co-ordinate
the patrols that will
swing into action when the
toads start moving. Last
year it was about mid-
February and with the mild
winter it could be imminent.
Mr Cranfield, of Nursey
Road, Alresford, said: "We
are trying to save as many
as we can, to make sure the
toad population continues"
Anyone interested in helping
can call Mr Cranfield on
01962 733932.
