Top public school launches campaign to raise £70m
WINCHESTER College has launched a huge fundraising campaign to raise £70m over the next decade.
The school is attempting to widen access and display how it benefits the wider community.
It comes after the Government outlined plans to tighten the rules on private schools claiming charitable status. Without it, they could face soaring tax bills.
The 770-pupil school will use much of the £70m for bursaries to pay for boys from poorer families. It plans to provide full bursaries for 67 boys, and cover up to half of the fees for a further 134.
It also proposes to convert the warden's stables into a £1.2m museum to display its works of art including historic watercolours, Greek vases, Egyptian artefacts and Chinese porcelain.
Head teacher Ralph Towns-end in a letter to parents said: "Institutions like Winchester can no longer rely upon fee increases and a continual narrowing of access without threatening their long-term viability."
