Labour candidate John O'Farrell 'disappointed' Mrs Thatcher didn't die in Brighton bomb
2:25pm Sunday 17th February 2013 in Eastleigh
By Julian Robinson, Eastleigh Chief Reporter
John O'Farrell
LABOUR’S Eastleigh by-election hopeful is at the centre of a storm today over revelations that he once wrote of his hopes Margaret Thatcher had been murdered in a terrorist attack.
John O’Farrell told of his “surge of excitement” on hearing of the IRA bomb attack on Brighton’s Grand Hotel in 1984 – adding that was “disappointed” the assassination attempt had failed.
The satirist, aiming to take the seat vacated by shamed Chris Huhne, wrote that he asked himself: “Why did she have to leave the bathroom two minutes earlier?”
It was a reference to the fact Lady Thatcher’s bathroom was destroyed in the explosion, which claimed the lives of five people including Tory MP Sir Anthony Berry.
Mr O’Farrell also wrote that he wished the former Prime Minister had lost the Falklands War in 1982 – a conflict in which 255 British servicemen were killed.
Former Conservative Party chairman Lord Tebbit, whose wife was paralysed in the blast, has described the candidate an ‘incontinently voiced moral reprobate”.
In a book published in 1998, Mr O’Farrell wrote: “I would invent all sorts of elaborate scenarios whereby she would cease to be Prime Minister of Britain. Some involved a sombre deputation from the 1922 Committee (of Tory MPs) and others involved me popping up with a machine gun at the Conservative Party conference.
“In October 1984, when the Brighton bomb went off, I felt a surge of excitement at the nearness of her demise and yet disappointment that such a chance had been missed. This was me – the pacifist, anti-capital punishment, anti-IRA liberal – wishing that they had got her. ‘Why did she have to leave the bathroom two minutes earlier?’ I asked myself over and over again’.”
A Labour Party spokesman said: “John made these comments many years ago and of course does not condone or wish harm on anyone.”

Another moron to add to the mix then!! Maybe another Margaret Thatcher is what this country needs to get it back on an even keel again, even if only for a time. She wasn't all bad!! (she was the reason I didn't have to suffer school milk forever!!).

a lot of people that comment negatively about thatcher either weren't around or didn't have to work when labour was in power in the 70's obviously. having racked up huge unemployment and blown all the country's money along with constant strikes they were thankfully voted out and the tories had to clean up the mess. fast forward to 2010 and we are back there again. no doubt labour will get in again at the next election and we'll be going through all this pain again in eight years time.

Unfortunately like most politicians she yielded to political idealism rather than realise her potential as a public servant. They all do pretty much.
As for the comments of Mr O'Farrell, A modicum of decency is the very least we should expect from our prospective MP's so he can hardly be excused.

You must be joking!
She won the election on the slogan, 'Labour is not working' showing a long queue of people representing the unemployed, but the unemployment figures increased under her administration.
We had interest rates in their teens, which saw many people lose their homes because they could not afford the increase in their morgage payments, and the only growth in the job market was for bailiffs.
Add to that the financial mess she got the country in with Black Wednesday, and that was after she had sold off virtually all of the country's assets, which is why North Sea oil and gas, like gas and electricity is in the hands of foreign companies.

The other point here is history has to be put in context - i hated Thatcher for her demolition of all things i held dear - but that was then and yes even i think the unions are outdated - part of our past.
But so was Thatcher - shes part of a past i dont think we can be proud of as well - so yes im a part of 'the lazy stupid half' but MGRA - so are you.

Why did the police have their identification numbers removed from their epaulettes?
If what you say happened in the docks is true, then it was as a result of apathy by the union membership as happened years earlier with the Electricians union.
The big difference between what happened in the docks and what happened with the police is that IF there was any violence in the docks, it was between dock workers, who were not public servants that tax payers were funding.
The Police are, and were then, public servants, upholding the law of the land. The actions that they took part in were not in accordance with the law of the land.

All this aside, we are talking about a woman who called Nelson Mandela a 'terrorist', and supported the dictator Augusto Pinochet to his dying day, a man with the blood of tens of thousands of innocent Chileans on his hands. While it is always wrong to call for the death of anyone in a democratic society, there will always be a small part of me that does wish she had died that day.
And before all the right-wing backlash starts, I'd say the same about Arthur Scargill, the Militant tendency etc.

The unions cannot be absolved blame for the situation that led to the election of Margaret Thatcher, and I have almost as little time for them as I do for her extreme brand of neo-liberal capitalism. But...what she did to this country amounts to cultural and social genocide, via the most extreme form of economic blackmail. Just why was it necessary to abandon all our industries, which were once the best in the wordld? Coal, steel, cars, ships, planes - no other country in histroy (not even the US) has culled all of its manufacturing base with such ruthlessness so as to confine a whole generation to the scrapheap. The existence of an 'underclass' in UK society today is a direct legacy of Thatcherism. And why shouldn't people surrender to a life on benefits, when after all there is 'no such thing as society'?

Yes some did remove their identification numbers, to be told to put them back by more senior officers, I have direct family knowledge of that, but a large number without never had them, being old uniforms issued to serving members of the Army to make up numbers. No way could troops been seen on the streets, but dressed as coppers, not a problem.

Then she handed the baton over to Blair and Brown, who then proceeded to make matters worse. Now only two countries have greater debt than ours, Japan and Ireland. So in hindsight she was bad for our country, and this is before all the cover ups, that will soon come out into the open.

now there is a good reason not to vote for him, where is his respect!
Respect is earned, all she earned was contempt from a whole generation.
I was a junior clerk in the docks & witnessed a vote by Dockies where the strike vote was defeated by two vote I left to do a delivery for my boss & saw a gang around four men beating the c+ap out of them I went back to work & there was another gathering outside my office & the vote went in favour of a strike.
Pickets weren't peaceful pickets & you were in trouble if you tried going to work so why paint the picture as Maggie the beater of workers?
It was the Unions destroyers of Jobs .
It was Unions where the hospitals could only do emergency operations due to the power strikes.
It was Mountains of rubbish with rats every where & it was bodies spilling out of the morgue,
Do you not remember the song You Can't get me I'm part of the Union till the day I die? that was the problem & Maggie sorted it & if she had to use force she did as some one had to do it.
Labour backed out of it & allowed the Unions to run riot that's why they were voted out.
This scum saying she or anyone should die in a political assassination or our troops should die & lose a war & our country men of the Falkland Islands should be ruled by Argentina is unbelievable how can he be a Candidate for the British Government?
O'Farrel would he be better off standing in N/S Irelands elections?
Why did the police have their identification numbers removed from their epaulettes?
If what you say happened in the docks is true, then it was as a result of apathy by the union membership as happened years earlier with the Electricians union.
The big difference between what happened in the docks and what happened with the police is that IF there was any violence in the docks, it was between dock workers, who were not public servants that tax payers were funding.
The Police are, and were then, public servants, upholding the law of the land. The actions that they took part in were not in accordance with the law of the land.
As for what that woman did to our industry's, that will never be forgotten, nor forgiven by those of us thrown on the scrap-heap just as we finished our apprenticeships...
As far as Nu-Labia's chances go, the railway works, Pirelli and Ford's might have once made it a possibility, now the center of Beastly is the only area where they stand a chance, everywhere outside the center is too Lib-Con, in my experience of the place.
