THIS group of adventure park staff had plenty of reason to go bananas after breaking a world record.

The workers from Go Ape, at Itchen Valley Country Park, bounced their way into the history books as part of a national challenge to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Having donned hairy costumes, they hopped all the way to Southampton General Hospital in Tremona Road as part of a race across the UK.

And while taking part in the Big Banana Relay they have managed to set a new world record for transporting a blow-up banana 10km by space hopper.

Monkeying around to bag the record were director Rebecca Mayhew, Fil Davies, Cameron Turner, Will Fry, Alex Morris, Jenni Casey, Katy De Vesselitsky Merrimen, Steve Evans, Bertie Walsh, Laz Crick and Tess Powderham.

Fil Davies said: “It feels great to have broken a world record, and it was fantastic for the Go Ape team to do something fun and imaginative to raise money.

“There are a few aches and pains after the experience but it was definitely worth it.”

The blow-up banana is now on an epic journey of 1,823 miles across the UK visiting all 28 Go Ape sites and the “gorillas” are expected to use the quirkiest forms of transport possible.

Some of the money raised will be used to support a new specialist unit at Southampton General Hospital for 16 to 24-year-olds.

Fil added: “We’re looking forward to seeing what our colleagues at the other Go Ape sites across the country do for their legs of the Big Banana Relay.”
