IT could be the most festive neighbourhood in Hampshire.

Hundreds of people have travelled from across the county to Greyhound Close in Hedge End as its annual Christmas lights display is now in full swing.

The extravaganza sees the usually quiet cul-de-sac transformed into a winter wonderland.

The display has raised £38,000 for Naomi House children’s hospice in Sutton Scotney, near Winchester, since it started in 2004.

This year organisers say it will be raising money for Ronald McDonald House as well, and they hope that generous people who come to see the spectacular lights will dig deep in their pockets to help both charities.

One of the organisers, Mike Parsons, from Greyhound Close, said that homes taking part have had to come up with ways to keep the showfresh and new, but he believes that this year’s show will be better than last year’s.

Mr Parsons said: “It is becoming increasingly difficult each year to find things so there is an element of creativity this year and we have to create things for the show.

“People come from across Hampshire to see the lights and it shows the power of Facebook. If you measure our success based on donations, it has really snowballed.”

Last year the show became a victim of its own success as there was traffic chaos as hundreds of people descended on Greyhound Close.

Organisers are hoping to prevent a repeat of those events this year.

Mr Parsons added: “We have worked with the police and Hedge End Council over the last year.

“There are still some people that are unhappy because there are a few people who park irresponsibly.”

People travelling to the event are urged to walk to Greyhound Close and park either at Hedge End railway station or Dowd’s Farm community car park in Whites Way.
