HUNDREDS of people enjoyed the Netley Marsh Carnival and fete on Saturday.

The cavalcade including two floats and six walking groups followed by two steam engines made its way from the Gamekeeper pub in Woodlands to St Matthew’s Church.

A marching musical accompaniment was provided by Stanley’s Own Centenary Band from Copythorne.

Once the parade had reached the church field the Jubilee Brass Band took over as people enjoyed smashing crockery, the coconut shy and welly throwing.

Carnival queen was Orla Hogan-Cottee, aged 12, with two princesses, Ellie Harvey, nine, and Jessica Healy, six.

Ian Sims, carnival chairman, said of the event, which has been going for 26 years: “It was great. There were a lot of people lining the streets.”

Mr Sims said he hoped to top the £2,000 raised in 2014.

Proceeds go to the local scouts and guides and St Matthews.
