A father-of-two was killed in a horror car crash on holiday - just before he was due to retire.

Tim Malone, 67, and wife Yvonne Howard, 62, from Eastleigh, were just minutes away from reaching their treasured caravan when they were in a head-on collision with a car driven by a 19-year-old.

Tim, who worked at Ordnance Survey was about to retire so he could "go see the world" when he was killed on the way to a seaside beauty spot in the Gower, South Wales.

Yvonne was hospitalised with a broken leg and needing surgery following the smash near the campsite where they had holidayed for the past 30 years.

Heartbroken son Joe, 32, said: "They were just 10 minutes away from the caravan when they were hit in a head-on collision.

"We are just devastated. He has been taken from us.

"He hasn't got the chance to see future grandchildren and we feel robbed at the moment - for him, and us, and especially for my mum."

Tim and Yvonne, who had been happily married for 41 years, were driving to their caravan in the idyllic seaside village of Port Eynon on the Gower, South Wales.

The couple were coming to the end of a three and a half hour drive to their "second home" to enjoy a weekend by the sea together.

But they were killed when their Rover MG ZT estate crashed into a white Kia Proceed on a winding country road.

The couple had met in Southampton and married after a six-week whirlwind romance.

They had sons Joe and Jack, 28, and brought them up with family seaside holidays in the caravan at Port Eynon.

Joe said his Ordnance Survey worker father was looking forward to a well-earned retirement and taking the caravan travelling.

Joe said: "He was an outstanding father and an amazing husband who would do everything with mum.

"He enjoyed going on walks with mum, used to race go karts and loved going to Le Mans 24 hour race every year.

"Dad was a keen mountain biker even at the age of 67 and got me and my brother into it at an early age.

Daily Echo:

"He was about to retire and enjoy the rest of his life pretty soon, and they were going to buy a motorhome and go see the world.

"My parents have had to work quite hard to put me and my brother through university and now he has not got the chance to experience the rest of his life."

Police said two young male passengers travelling in the white Kia Proceed were treated for minor injuries in hospital but have since been released.

A South Wales Police spokesman said the 19-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the crash on the B4271 on Friday night around 10.25pm.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
