Residents are calling for council chiefs to come clean over plans for a new development creating hundreds of jobs in Eastleigh.

They want to know the full details of the proposed scheme for the old civic offices and magistrates court on Leigh Road.

Last month the Daily Echo revealed how plans to develop the site would create 300 new jobs.

Under the proposals site would be transformed into a car dealership with three show rooms, two fast food restaurants and an office block.

But residents living nearby believe the scheme will involve a 24-hour McDonalds Drive-thru.

they say that will cause major congestion, added noise pollution and will increase anti-social behaviour in the area.

Now they have launched a campaign against the scheme.

Most opposition comes from flats on Cherry Tree Court, opposite the proposed site.

Chairwoman and director of Cherry Tree Court, Vicky Mant, 30, said: “If the proposed plan is to have a 24-hour fast food drive-thru goes ahead, we are the ones who are going to be affected by higher volumes of traffic and noise pollution.

“The development does need to happen I agree, but what we don’t want to see the unnecessary cutting down of trees in the area and getting rid of nature where a lot of dog walkers from the building go.

“If the development is going ahead I would much rather see it used as community centre, which the magistrates’ court is already being used as.”

She added that with two hotels already in the area, residents are worried the introduction of fast food outlets will, mean the site becomes a stop-off for motorway traffic coming off the M3 and cause gridlock on Leigh Road.

Lawrence Norris, 42, who lives in nearby Cable Street added: “If there is a 24 hour food joint, that road is going to be manic.

“When it hits rush hour Leigh Road will just be gridlocked.”

The borough council said full details of applications will only be released once the plan has gone through the planning committee stage, which is due to be heard on November 10.

A spokesperson for the council said: “An outline planning application for the old civic offices site has been submitted and will be considered by Eastleigh local area committee.

“The committee will take into consideration a wide range of issues including those of traffic impact, noise and hours of operation.”
