A MAN has died after a car plunged from a bridge onto a railway line in Hampshire.

Emergency services are on the scene of the incident that happened after the Skoda car fell from a bridge in Fair Oak.

It is understood that at least one person was left trapped inside the vehicle and a British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman confirmed that a man has died.

Police have now confirmed that the driver of the Skoda died and are appealing for witnesses in connection with the incident.

A spokeswoman said the next of kin have been told but they will not be releasing the name of the deceased until formal identification procedures are completed.

Earlier at the scene cyclist Steven Lidell, 52, from Eastleigh said: "I was just passing through for an afternoon bike ride when I saw the road closed sign and asked someone what had happened.

"It's shocking. It sounds like it was quite a dramatic incident and a horrible scene - it's very upsetting to think something like this could happen so close to home.

"I understand there are some concerns about that bridge because there's no way of knowing who is doing what, perhaps more safety measures should be put in place.

"My heart goes out to the family."

Highway maintenance workers were called to the scene this evening to get the crashed car onto a tow vehicle and the road remained closed until at least 6.30pm.

Police oversaw the removal of the vehicle and three fire engines were seen leaving the scene as well as two ambulances at 4pm today.

Officers were also talking to residents who come to the scene to find out what has happened.

  • Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 440 from 9/6/16.

One resident of Allington Lane, who did not wish to be named, said the road was "lethal."

She said this was the third accident on the road in a matter of months and recalled a crash recently where she found a man who had crashed into a ditch.

She said: "It's awful. Ultimately that person belonged to someone and it's very sad.

"This road is lethal though people come down it so fast because it's a straight road and then they get to a bend and lose control.

"One of my neighbours came to tell me what had happened, it's awful.

"I was out at the time of the incident so I didn't hear anything.

"They really should do something about this road. In particular that bridge, there's no way of knowing what's coming and people come so fast over it you're always a bit uncertain and they should put mirrors there or something.

"It's very sad."

A BTP spokesman said: “We received reports at 12.37pm on Thursday, 09 June of a car on the tracks near Allington Lane, Hampshire.

“A car came off the road and landed adjacent to the railway line.

“Officers from Hampshire Constabulary attended with colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service and the male driver of the car was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family as well as understand how the car came to be on the tracks.”

They said car is thought to have left the road at Allington Lane close to the junction with Hogwood Lane.

The incident is thought to have happened just before 12.35pm when emergency services were called.

A police spokeswoman said: “The road is currently closed so we would urge motorists to avoid the area if possible.

“We would like to thank motorists for their patience as we deal with this incident.”

South West Trains are reporting that all services are now unable to run between Fareham and Eastleigh as a result, and diversions are being put in place.

Services may be diverted via Guildford or Southampton and some delays are expected.

The length of Allington Lane will be closed for the rest of the afternoon.
