IT IS one of the most prestigious golf trophies in the sport.

Now a Hampshire firm has recreated it after a unique request from an organisation set up by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

A Bursledon-based 3D printing company was asked to use the latest 3D printing and scanning technology to produce 18 quarter-size replicas of the prestigious Falcon Trophy.

Staff at isodo3d were approached by IMG Golf and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, established in 2006 by Abu Dhabi’s crown prince His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The council – which also supports the staging of international sporting events such as Formula 1’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – asked the company to reproduce replicas of the trophy awarded to the winner of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship golf tournament for the associated pro-am contest.

Staff at isodo3d produced a master model of the trophy – which features a falcon and a golf ball – which was then hand-finished and painted to a gloss surface.

Trophies were then sent for plating and logos and tournament sponsors were engraved onto each plinth using a laser.

Once all parts of the project were completed, the trophies were assembled, polished, quality checked and sent out to Abu Dhabi in time for the tournament.

John Cousins, isodo3d’s managing director, said: “We were keen to achieve the brief and demonstrate how this technology can be used in this way.

“These trophies represent the very best in golf and we knew that whoever won one, would have been outstanding in their field.

“It was our challenge to produce a trophy befitting of the achievements of the winners and I definitely think we met the criteria.”

Peter German, tournament director of the Abu Dhabi event, said: “The Falcon Trophy has become such an iconic feature of the championship that we wanted to reward the winners of the annual pro-am, played as a curtain raiser to the tournament, with a replica trophy as a special memento of the day.

“We approached isodo3d who successfully produced a fantastic and accurate replica – they looked good and the winners loved them.”
