TIME is running out to have your say on the forthcoming general election.

There are just hours left to make sure that you register to vote.

On June 8 residents across Hampshire will choose new MPs for constituencies in Southampton Test and Itchen, Fareham, Winchester, Meon Valley, Eastleigh and Romsey.

Now those who have not registered are being urged to ensure then do so to make sure they have can take part in the snap poll.

Hampshire residents who aren’t registered have until the registration deadline of midnight tonight.

However, if you are unable to cast your vote in person on June 8, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.

The deadline to return your application to vote by post is 5pm tomorrow while a proxy vote, which allows you to nominate someone else to cast your vote has its deadline at 5pm on Wednesday, May 31.

Councillor Sean Woodward, leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: “It’s important to make sure that you register to vote to ensure that you vote and have your say.

“Voting is part of a democracy where people have their say, so make sure you register.”

Mark Heath, returning officer for Southampton, added: “There is the potential for a high voter turnout on June 8 so I would encourage Southampton residents to take a few minutes to plan what time they will arrive at the polling station.

“Polling stations are open for 15 hours from 7am until 10pm. We will be fully resourced to minimise waiting times but queues may occur.”

Emma Hartley, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission, said: “Our research indicates that recent home movers in particular are less likely to be registered to vote.

“Often people think that applying to pay council tax means you are added to the electoral register too, but that is not the case.

“If you’ve moved house in the past few months make sure you take five minutes and go online to register to vote now.”

Residents not registered to vote at their current address can register online at gov.uk/registertovote.
