Armed police were also forced to shoot a dog as they searched one of the properties during their investigation.

Police were alerted to the residential street just before 11.30pm on Thursday night to reports of a man suffering knife wounds.

Paramedics battled to save Mr Woods’ life but he died in an ambulance on his way to Southampton General Hospital.

The 22-year-old is originally from the Southampton area but moved to Fareham.

He then went to Fareham College where he studied hairdressing.

Yesterday police released a photograph of Mr Woods but his grieving family did not want to comment.

A heavy police presence remained at the scene of the incident over the weekend, with forensic officers and tents set up as the investigation - codenamed Operation Path - continues.

An officer at the scene said he couldn’t confirm how long the cordons would remain in place for.

Two houses along the street remain sectioned off to the public as part of the operation.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Justin Norris said: “Incidents like this have a significant impact on people living in the area and I would like to thank the local community for their assistance.

“Residents will have seen officers carrying out house to house enquiries.

“We will continue to be in the area and members of the neighbourhood policing team will be more than happy to speak to anyone if they have concerns relating to this activity.”

Police yesterday said that a 51-year-old woman from Eastleigh who was also arrested on suspicion of murder has been released from custody, but remains under investigation.

Residents told the Daily Echo of the “unexpected” and “shocking” scenes that unfolded throughout the early hours of Friday morning as cordons were set up and the street blocked off.

Ian Arnold, who lives just yards away in Elm Grove, said: “We saw an air ambulance helicopter and got up to see what had happened and it landed over in Fleming Park.

“I’ve never know anything like this happen in the 15 years I’ve lived here.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be identified, added: “At 11.30pm, I woke up and heard people shouting in the street.

“I woke up Friday morning and there was police tape everywhere.

“You don’t expect any of this at your own doorstep.”
