COFFEE is brewing and cake stands are mounted as a popular charity event is set to return this week.

Hampshire residents are encouraged to share a cup of coffee and a piece of cake to raise cash in support of people affected by cancer.

Macmillan Cancer Support’s flagship fundraiser, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is to return to homes, workplaces, communities and schools on Friday.

Having raised a total of £29.5 million nationwide in 2016, this year’s event aims to raise even more money in its 27th year.

Beth Bartlam, Macmillan Cancer Support area fundraising manager for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, said: “This year, the cumulative total raised by Coffee Morning hosts and supporters since it began will pass the £200 million mark, which is a staggering amount! It just goes to show that every slice of cake and cup of coffee can add up to make a real difference. We are really proud of the contribution which people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have made and we hope we can count on their support again this year.”

Last year, 7,489 coffee mornings were held across the South Central region, raising £1,758,092.

Once again Marks and Spencer will be the official partner with the retailer will also be donating 10 per cent from sales of classic cakes, as well as a vast selection of biscuits, cupcakes and cookie mixes.

All the money raised will be used to support those affected by cancer.

Figures showed that there are 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK today and this number is set to grow to 4 million by 2030.

Residents who would like to help make a difference on people’s lives an take part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning are encouraged to get together with family, friends or colleagues and enjoy coffee and cakes.

They can also register their free fundraising pack via the website by visiting www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee. or taking part in a coffee morning held near their homes.
