A LORRY driver caused "carnage" in the centre of Eastleigh today when he knocked down a lamppost and a road sign - and then "drove off".

Witnesses say the driver uprooted the two pieces of street furniture in the collision and scraped a parked car as he tried to turn onto the narrow street.

One witness, Ryan Moore, a scaffolder from Bishops Waltham, said: "I couldn't believe my eyes.

"He knocked over this big lamppost with a big glass bulb.

"It was smashed all over the street - it was lucky there was no-one standing near it.

"It was carnage."

Mr Moore, 29, said the driver stopped briefly to examine the damage, before driving off.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We received a call regarding an incident where a lorry is reported to have collided with a lamppost and a parked car in Factory Road, Eastleigh, at 11.10am.

"The lorry has not stopped at the scene.

"Investigations are ongoing."
