Tram-train backed

HAMPSHIRE’S transport chiefs have backed plans for a high-frequency tram-train running between Southampton and Fareham.

As revealed by the Daily Echo yesterday, futuristic hybrid vehicles will replace standard trains on the existing Netley line under an ambitious multi-million pound scheme.

The reintroduction of passenger services on the Waterside line between Totton and Hythe were also supported by the Transport for South Hampshire joint committee.

The proposals were among 11 top priorities identified in a new report outlining the future of railways in South Hampshire over the next 30 years.

Who on earth wants to travel to Fareham?

This would of been more ideal to use on branch lines then a main line, couldn't they have put these on the old Gosport railway line and the Hythe railway line...

If they wanted to put these on the Netley Railway then build a chord up in Eastleigh so the likes of Southern and FGW can stop off at Airport/Eastleigh and Hedge End, which would free up space on the Netley Line which could then offer a 30 minute service between So'ton and Pompy ran either by SWT or these Tram's.

It would be good at stations like St Denys where there are 2 city bound trains and hour- arriving within minutes of each other. Potentially it's a busy station= make the most of it.

Great idea Zeo. Connecting Ports/Fareham to Soton airport via a chord round the old works would open up a whole range of new journeys.

The devil is in the detail here. Tram trains along the Fareham - St Denys line were first proposed as phase 2 of the original South East Hants Rapid Transit Plan. Phase 1 was to be the "Gosport SUpertram" running from Fareham High St through Gosport to Portsmouth under Ports Harbour. Phase 2 makes sense only if phase 1 exists because of through running possibilities all the way to Portsmouth, but phase 1 has now been downgraded to a guided busway after years of the usual inept meddling, broken promises, lack of vision and Treasury restriction. After all - who would regard having to get off a tram at Fareham then wait for a conventional train to Portsmouth as a "service improvement"? Also half the trains between Fareham and Southampton call at no intermediate stations at all or at Swanwick only so a tram would clearly be inappropriate for those users. Fast trains could be routed via the chord suggested by Zeo but how would semi fast trains with intermediate stops be slotted between a much slower, high frequency tram service calling at all the proposed new extra stations? Unless the Gosport supertram idea is actually built then this idea makes no sense at all. Not sure why it has been floated now.

All Talk!

No DO!

(Security word? wind-site! Most appropriate because, like the link from Fareham to Gosport, it's a load of hot air!)

Has anyone done the research to see how many people would use this for work everyday and get out of their cars which is what is needed. Like a previous comment without phase 1 Gosport/portsmouth link it makes no sense.

I've been in three cities this summer where trams are in use:

St Petersburg, Helsinki and Amsterdam, but they only worked well in the last two cities. The Russian trams were antiquated and fighting for space on log-jammed city streets - they looked like they'd been in service since the 60's. In Helsinki and Amsterdam, however, the trams were part of a fully integrated transport system and so worked really well.

I got to use the Amsterdam system, and it was really clean and efficient, but had obviously had loads of money pumped into it to ensure there were no gaps in the service. I was able to buy a 24 hour ticket for 7 Euros, which could be used on trams, metro and buses as many times as I wanted.

As Andy says, for the system to work over here, all of the phases need to be in place. I would love to be able to use such a system, but I have to resort to the car. If I wanted to use public transport to get to work (at stupid o'clock in the am), I would have to get a bus from the outskirts of Southampton (near Bursledon) into the City, to catch a train to Park Gate - I'd have to travel 20 mins in the wrong direction!

Even the Scots are getting it right. My mum and dad just came back from Edinburgh and were able to take a trip on a bus, the equivalent of going from Fareham to Hayling Island, to Southampton then back to Fareham, for a couple of quid. Before he got his bus pass, it would cost him that to get into Fareham which was a 15 min bus ride!

Security words - more-hope!

As far as I am concerned open up the travel links to enable workers to travel too and from their home base. Also it would encourage tourists to travel too and from airports and docks, let alone freightage. I think it would reduce the number of cars and lorries on the road BUT keep fares to a minimum but I cannot see this happening because Investors need to be kept happy. Industry will only thrive when commuters have a fair deal. But as mentioned, will all this talk come into fruition?

Why has this story failed to be of any interest to me?

It goes both ways remember. A more pertinent, and easily answered, question,is "who on earth wants to travel out of Fareham?". The answer of course being "everybody who's ever been there".

Was it literally backed? As in, did the tram reverse?

After using the LUAS tram system in dublin, i think this would be a good idea to strenghten transport links. Over there trams come about every 4 minutes and are rarely late. However i feel that yet again this is just some big idea that will just fade into obscurity, as useful as this scheme would be.

Can never ever see this happening. As ever it's a load of hot air from some government quango. Sure - open up an express tram links all over the south of Hampshire using lines shut or down graded by Beeching (correct me if I'm wrong with the name)and watch as mass housing development follows in its path.

Bursledon to Park Gate looks like 3 miles on Google maps - have you considered commuting by bike - should only take you 15mins.

Think of the petrol money you could save...
