Leigh Road in Eastleigh to be closed

MOTORING misery is set to sweep across a Hampshire town as one of its busiest roads is closed for resurfacing.

Eastleigh’s major route into Chandler’s Ford, Leigh Road, will be closed for up to two weeks, sparking huge delays for motorists, especially during the rush hour.

Hampshire County Council is to resurface the carriageway between the M3 overpass through to the traffic light junction at Bournemouth Road.

The essential safety work will start today and will be carried out in two phases, with night working on one section of the road to minimise disruption.

But due to the need to completely remove the old road surface, and to undertake drainage works before laying the new surface, council chiefs have said it will be necessary to close the stretch in both directions.

Residents will be able to access their off-road parking, but while pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, vehicle access for residents will only be available via the Bournemouth Road junction.

Motorists are being warned to allow extra time for journeys in the Eastleigh area, particularly during peak periods.

Councillor Mel Kendal, executive member for environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “This is a significant scheme of essential roads maintenance that must be completed to prolong the life of the road and maintain safety for road users.

“Obviously we recognise that closing the road will cause a great deal of inconvenience and lead to delays but it is not a decision that has been taken lightly.”

The work is expected to be completed by February 20.

Diversions

■ The main diversion route in both directions will utilise Bournemouth Road, Winchester Road, Allbrook Way, Woodside Avenue and Leigh Road.

■ An alternative southbound diversion will also be in place along Bournemouth Road and then Chestnut Avenue for alternative access to the M27 and Eastleigh town centre.

■ For the overnight closures on February 8 to February 11 from 10pm to 6am, there will be a motorway diversion via Junction 12 of the M3 and then joining the main diversion route.

Surely HCC and EBC could of worked in partnership with each other to reduce the disruption to road users as the roads works on the crossroads of Leigh Road with Woodside Avenue and Passfield Avenue are still in place. The roads have been an absolute nightmare and this is going to compound the problem! Well done!!!!

if they had kept up the 5 year program where they resurface the roads every 5 years, this 2 week closer would of not happen, it would of only been for one day max, some thing else you can blame the 80's government for.

This might be the appropriate place to mention this...but:

Central Bridge in Southampton will be closing on Monday 15th February, not for two weeks, but 54 weeks... So as you come off the Itchen Bridge, or try to go on to it from the city side, there will now only be two routes instead of three... For anyone who travels this route, it will be a nightmare.

Two suggestions to Southampton City Council: If the work HAS to be done, do not start ANY other roadworks in the vicinity for the next year, and rephase the all the sets of lights by Ocean Village to prevent the inevitable gridlock, as neither available route is capable of absorbing 50% more traffic!

Is anyone prepared to take a bet whether the Council will do ANYTHING to mitigate this issue....thought not!

They only have the road closed from the fire station up to Bournemouth road so coming off at junction 14 should be fine as long as your either going to turn right or go up Oakmount road.

If this is due to 'safety reasons', then what about the state of most of the roads in Chandlers Ford? At the very least they must be VERY unsafe. Pine Road and many other surrounding roads are an absolute disgrace- they are literally falling to bits. Hiltingbury Road isn't much better and the state of the finish to the roads following the utility works (which has overrun now by 3 months according to the Hampshire Highways website) in Hursley Road is nothing short of appalling. And why haven't the potholes caused by the cold weather been repaired yet throughout the area? Our roads are a complete mess, yet we pay for their upkeep. Bad budgeting by the council? The wear and tear on our vehicles is shocking. But I bet if we claimed any damages we would get a nice polite letter wriggling out of any responsibility.

Interesting that this is two weeks of disruption when across the council border in Southampton resurfacing works like those on Millbrook Road West take about five times as long.

Briliant. One part of Government tell us to drive 5 fewer miles a week, via adverts paid for by our hard earnt taxes

Meanwhile another turns our roads into a maze with roadworks often extended for Months with Seemingly little work going on .

Security word Fine-team (indeed)

I had to laugh about the recent loss of so much salt and grit when being spread by the lorries over recent icy weather. Complete waste of time and money.

Most of it ended up in the potholes!

I hope they do something about the traffic lights on Leigh Road, catch them wrong and it can take 3 days to travel half a mile!

Back in the good? old days, when Maggie T, was having a go at Arther S. over the miners' dispute, 1979 ish. She was recruiting cops by the cartload, to man the picket lines. Well, they were touring the towns, 5 in a car, (unmarked) and in convoy, (no! I am not joking). to try and earn some beer money Well Mr.Brite Spark, One Sunday afternoon, I was taking my young daughter and a couple of her friends to have a swim at the Passfield Ave, baths. As I approached the (revamped) lights to turn right, I got a Green Filter, but!, when I was only a yard from it, it went out, but I was already commited to make the manoeuvre, and as there was nothing coming completed the turn.
Having unloaded the kids in the car park, this car pulled up next to me and in to jumps this novice copper, shouting, - "didn't you see us"- "didn't you see us". takes my details and gives me (30 years with a clean licence) a load of mouth and slams the door of my Volvo, as if it had no right to be on the hinges. £30.00 fine for driving without due care and attention. licence endorced. I went back that evening to study these lights, and found that the green filter lit up for 5 seconds, and £30 was a days pay in those days. So be warned.
