High Court ruling means work can go ahead on controversial scheme

WORK can go ahead on the Rose Bowl’s controversial hotel after a judge threw out a legal bid to block the development, the Daily Echo can reveal.

The High Court has refused to hold a judicial review into a massive £32m loan by Eastleigh council bosses to bail out the transformation of the home of Hampshire Cricket.

The Rose Bowl Transformation

Critics attacked it as a gamble with taxpayers’ money while the council claimed it would create 200 jobs, bring £20m a year to the area and attract top sports and entertainment events.

As reported by the Daily Echo, three hotel companies – Meridian Leisure, McDonalds Hotel and Shire Hotels – launched legal action but that has now been dismissed by deputy judge John Randall QC.

He said the challenge had “no realistic prospect of success”.

It was feared that if the hotel project was killed off it would have put the whole £48m transformation of the Rose Bowl – including additional seating, hospitality boxes and a championship golf course – in jeopardy.

Amazing. Eastleigh Taxpayers now burdened with £32million debt with no Tenant signed up to deal.
5,000 people in Eastleigh on benefits and council is borrowing millions to build 5* luxury Hotel for a privileged few to enjoy. LOL!
This will end in tears, mark my words.

Have to agree with you. It's madness the council borrowing to fund this, if it was such a good deal the private sector would have stumped up the cash. Feel sorry for the taxpayers having to fund this whilst receiving little in return.

Yea Eastleigh is a bit of a hole nowadays.
I would rather the money went on things like this than people on benefits though.
Not all i might add, but for every genuine case, there are at least 10 lead swingers.

Only an uninformed idiot with an envious chip on his shoulder would automatically assume that hotels get all their business from entertaining "Posh people". Hotels get their business from other people's business or in other words it is people staying in hotels on business trips who are creating business that in turn leads to more jobs. It is unfortunate that Socialists would rather smash a hotel to pieces so that nobody can stay in it, rather than aspire to become the kind of person who stays in them. One consolation is that on your deathbed you'll still be dreaming of pushing that tumbril when other people with more ability and endeavour than you actually went out and achieved something positive and constructive with their lives.

The only waste of Eastleigh taxpayers' money has come as a result of the 3 hotels making this doomed attempt to seek a judicial review in the first place.

I hope to read in the next few days that the High Court has ordered Mr Janmohamed and his 2 colleagues to pay all of the costs of both Eastleigh Council and the Rose Bowl plc.

The only motive for this case has been a fear on the part of the 3 hotels that they may lose trade when the new Rose Bowl hotel is built. Their pretence to protect the taxpayers of Eastleigh seems to have been seen for what is is by the High Court.

Once built this could be the best cricket village in the country and be the envy of all the other counties. It should be funded but this should be paid back as soon as possible.
