A NEW housing estate on a former factory site in Eastleigh will not make the mistakes of other developments in the area.
That was the message from developers planning to build on the Prysmian site, off Leigh Road.
The plans, which were approved at a meeting of Eastleigh Local Area Committee yesterday, will see more than 300 homes built at the site.
About 700 homes have already been built on one part of the site, in a development known as ‘phase one’ –with issues raised by local residents about parking and density of housing.
But developers Bellway Homes promised that ‘phase two’, on the section next to Dew Lane and Passfield Avenue, will be different.
A spokesperson said: “This development will provide a high quality living environment.
“It’s much lower density than phase one and there are more family homes.”
A report about the development also said that there would be 760 parking spaces, meaning about two-and-a-half spaces per home, compared to nearer one space per home on the first phase of development at the site.
The meeting heard that the development would include “character areas”
with different types of traditional architecture, a community building, public art and play areas.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the plans and it is expected that the new homes will be built in phases over the next few years.
