A HAMPSHIRE beauty spot is in line for a £30,000 environmental makeover.

Work will be carried out at Hiltingbury Lakes, in Chandler’s Ford, to improve the water quality, the diversity of the habitat and the general appearance of the popular area.

A reed bed will be planted at the northern end of the lakes and floating islands will be installed.

It is hoped the work will improve plant and animal life and help increase fish stocks.

It is all part of a partnership between Eastleigh Borough Council and the environment Agency and follows work in February to cut back trees.

Pamela Holden-Brown, chairman of the Chandler’s Ford Local Area Committee, said: “This is a really exciting project to help improve the lakes that are described as our area’s jewel in the crown.

“The improvements will help to safeguard the lakes for future generations to enjoy and encourage a greater range of plants, insects and animals.”

The works will be carried out by Wessex Land and Water Ltd within three weeks.

Great news. I don't know of these lakes, but any conservation project gets the thumbs up from me!
