Naked rambler Stephen Gough enjoying feeling of freedom for first time in years
11:14am Wednesday 18th July 2012 in Eastleigh
By Tara Russell, Feature Writer
Stephen Gough, the naked rambler
A HAMPSHIRE man dubbed the Naked Rambler has tasted his first day of freedom after six years in prison for refusing to wear clothes and he is of course in the nude.
Former Royal Marine Stephen Gough, 53, from Eastleigh , has vowed to continue walking around Britain with no clothes on - and plans to head south.
Gough, who has been convicted 17 times in 10 years, said his time behind bars had “flown by” but added he was looking forward to seeing his two teenage children for the first time in years.
Gough, who has been sentenced numerous times for breaches of the peace, was spoken to by officers when he was freed from Perth Prison yesterday in Scotland but was allowed to go on his way in an apparent shift in police policy.
On previous occasions he has been immediately arrested by officers waiting at the gates, but yesterday he walked free, despite being naked.
He said: "My opinion is that the police have thought 'the guy's not going to give up so let's have a think about it'. Something has changed and it is good news for me."
Gough was jailed for a breach of the peace and contempt of court- after he appeared in a court naked.
Police last night confirmed they had decided to adopt a different stance towards the naked rambler after holding talks with him.
Chief Inspector Andy McCann, of Tayside Police, in Scotland, said: "Tayside Police has a duty to uphold the law but it also has a responsibility to act in the public interest.
"We have been working to resolve this impasse. We hope that by exercising some discretion we can find a more satisfactory conclusion for all concerned."
Gough became known as the Naked Rambler after he tried to walk unclothed from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2004. He set off again in 2005 and was repeatedly arrested once he reached Scotland.
It has been estimated the cost involved in repeatedly arresting, prosecuting and jailing Gough over the past decade has been about £500,000.

The man surely needs help. MENTALLY.
If he is sane then he should think about what £500,000 would have done..Saved a childs life perhaps.
DID HE WEAR CLOTHES IN PRISON?

Yes, I know people say 'why should we be ashamed of our bodies?' and yes I agree but walking around naked is taking it to the extreme. Walking around in public in the buff is *not normal behaviour* otherwise we'd all be doing it. You might not be offended by the sight of a naked man walking around in public but I am.

There is no point in wasting police time and resources etc.
How does he get food on his walks.
Perhaps from "THE NAKED CHEF" ?

Does his actions harm anyone? Erm No, so why should we tell him how to live his life? we are all creatures upon this planet and we made the decision to conform to society and clothe ourselves. He has chosen not to confirm, and as long as he continues not to harm anyone just leave him be. There are other like minded individuals out there, perhaps not as extreme but plenty of people visit nudist beaches etc.
If you're distracted by a naked bloke walking down the street and you walk out into the traffic while distracted..?

If everybody did their own thing it would be rediculous.

Why should others have to put up with it.

Taking someone's liberty away is not something that should be done so lightly. To do otherwise is more characteristic of a fascist state than an alleged democracy.

We are born naked and have lived lives au naturale for 99.9% of the time humankind has been on the earth. Anyone who objects to seeing a human in their natural state has clearly been repressed by the values society and religions impose on us to limit our natural freedom!
Keep it up Mr Gough (actaully "keeping it up" might be going a bit far!!)

Under Scottish Law a Police Officer can be the actual complainant, and I gather, was so in this case.
In England and Wales actual simple nudity is not illegal - There must be some aggravating circumstances such as an intent to cause alarm and distress; or, there might be some sexual connotation such as for the Common Law: 'Outraging public decency.
Because of this Various County Police Forces use any handy Law which they can bend to fit.
Bear in mind that while nudity makes sex convenient, nudity does not always precede sexual behaviour and the two are not necessarily concurrent.
Anyone citing their wife, daughter, granny or whoever as being a victim is using their own sexual preconceptions rather than an actual complaint.
Clothing is for protection and convention.
This man obviously feels that he needs no protection and is oblivious of convention.
There are more dangerous people abroad on our streets, but because they outwardly 'conform' then no-one notices, until it all goes wrong.

The automatic assumption of a sexual reason for nudity, speaks volumes about those making the assumption.

I'm guessing if it's ok for an adult to walk around naked, it's the same with kids?
I'm sure the perverts would love the world to walk around naked. It's bad enough having perverts when people are clothed.
Sorry, but I can't agree that someone should walk around naked even for innocent reasons.
