MP backs calls for an end to animal experimentation

Chris Huhne Chris Huhne

A Hampshire MP has backed calls to prevent stray animals being experimented on.

Under new proposals from an EU directive, the government could have allowed the use by scientists of lost or abandoned cats and dogs.

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) has campaigned against the move – a call which has been backed by Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne .

After pressure from the BUAV and MPs, the Government has said that they “could not currently envisage” allowing tests on stray animals.

Mr Huhne said, "I'm delighted that the Government have listened to campaigners on this issue and applied common sense.

“It's clear that the original plan to allow stray animals to be used in experiments would be barbaric and a step backwards for animal welfare in this country.

"I hope the Government will now go further and ensure the protection of stray animals against experimentation."

Agree. Should use the lowlife scum such as murderers and rapists for these experiments.

Misleading headline. Huhne cas called for an end to experiments on STRAY animals, not animal experiments in general.

In other news, I'll just leave this here

Since experiments have to be done to ensure the development of life-saving drugs, instead of using animals, let's use wishy-washy liberals instead.... oh, sorry, that's the same thing.

Yet again a pathetic excuse to try and panda favour from the people without considering the questions.
1 if there is no testing of drugs in England, where there are some checks and visits to ensure that there is humane treatment (yes I realize this is somewhat an oxymoron) then the testing will be done elsewhere….Maybe China (look for the daily advert about the mistreatment of bears running on the echo at the moment). Which offer greater protection to animals welfare, supervised regulated testing or anything goes and you can eat it afterwards?
2 if the testing is not in the UK then the research is unlikely to be in the UK thereby allowing other countries to be at the forefront of technology
3 How much are we talking about, can you really do that many tests on animals without a detailed known medical history?

4 Perhaps the comment from the government they “could not currently envisage” allowing tests on stray animals. Indicates that this is already a non issue and the mp is just seeking the spotlight by nailing

Interesting that an EU loving Lib Dem MP is criticising an EU directive. Next election must be sooner than I thought.

No he is worried that when his case comes up he may end up living off the state in a different capacity.

I say test on prisoners who are serving 5 years or more including those who are serving for life instead of using animals.
