Blockbuster video goes into administration

Blockbuster in Portswood
Dozens of Hampshire jobs are at risk after Blockbuster became the latest high street name to plunge into administration.
The DVD and games rental company, which has 12 stores in the Daily Echo region, has appointed administrators after a period of poor trading.
The news comes after HMV took the same measures on Tuesday.
Staff at Blockbuster stores in Southampton, Eastleigh, Winchester, Fareham, Gosport and Ringwood now face uncertain futures as administrators Deloitte attempt to find a buyer for the firm.
The company, which has its main headquarters in Uxbridge, employs almost 4,200 staff in 528 stores across the UK.
Lee Manning, from Deloitte, said: “In recent years Blockbuster has faced increased competition from internet based providers along with the shift to digital streaming of movies and games.
“We are working closely with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible for all creditors.
“The core of the business is still profitable and we will continue to trade as normal in both retail and rental whilst we seek a buyer for all or parts of the business as a going concern.
“During this time gift cards and credit acquired through Blockbuster's trade-in scheme will be honoured towards the purchase of goods.”
It comes just a day after HMV also called in the administrators, following in the recent footsteps of Jessops, Comet and JJB Sports.

Given it's not even out at the cinema yet, how is Blockbuster going to compete with that?
The internet has literally destroyed everything :(((

I don't know anyone who hasn't already watched Django Unchained on a DVD burnt for free off the internet. Given it's not even out at the cinema yet, how is Blockbuster going to compete with that? The internet has literally destroyed everything :(((
That aside, illegal downloads are only a small part of the problem. Genuine internet and digital purchases from Amazon and iTunes is what has damaged retail stores. But thats just progress I'm afraid. Nobody has time to go and collect and return grubby DVD's when they can get them streamed or delivered the next day at a click of a button.

The problem is a lot bigger than than the internet, very company is going to have problems, and the smaller you are the sooner it will hit.

assistant: so i can't tempt you?

assistant: ok sir there's no need to take that attitude i'm just trying to help
me: (inside my head) aaaaarrrrgggghhh!!!
me: (the next day) this film wouldn't play in my dvd player - it's all scratched up.
assistant: hey that's ok (big smile) we'll give you a credit.

Argos are also going to the wall. It's sad, while there are those who pretend to care about people and the jobs they have in order to promote outdated politics (like you), consumerism is changing at a rapid rate and it only increases. The Internet is here and the High Street is already dead. Get over it.
I suppose if we took up China's laws on internet use, state censorship, that would make you happy.

a) Drive to your local blockbuster, park, find the film, drive home and then watch a film on a scratched DVD.............then drive back to return it.
or
b) Choose a film with your remote on Virgin / Sky etc with preveiws....one click and for approx the same cost watch the movie.
