HE CAN skateboard, stack cups and tidy away his toys.

Now this happy Hampshire pooch could have the chance to become a TV star.

Harry the Labrador-patterdale is ‘Pawditioning’ to become the face of a pet charity.

The four-year-old is in the finals and competing against dogs from across the UK for the Blue Cross advertising campaign.

He is hoping to win the role of the family pet in an advert encouraging viewers to support the charity which looks after sick and abandoned animals.

It’s a nationwide search for stardom by Blue Cross, which has a centre in Southampton, and launched last year with four regional heats.

More than 300 animals applied including rabbits, horses and cats and 70 entries were from the south.

Each pet was judged by a panel of pet experts including animal behaviourists and charity volunteers and Harry is one of four to have succeeded.

But the charity is now throwing the judging process out to the public with a final online vote.

Harry’s owner, Christina Farley from Fareham, said: “I entered Harry because I wanted to show what can be achieved through positive reinforcement clicker training, which can be used with any animal. Harry was in his element showing off his repertoire of tricks to the judges and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.”

Harry, who is nicknamed Happy Harry by everyone who meets him, was born in a village appropriately named Black Dog in Devon and since bringing him home at eight weeks, Christina has taught him a mixture of tricks using a clicker.

During the ‘Pawdition’ Harry showed off his skateboarding skills, rolled himself up in a blanket, stacked nesting cups and put coins into a piggy bank.

For the next week Harry needs people across the county to go online and vote.

Lara Alford, Pawdition judge and Blue Cross rehoming manager, said: “The Pawditions were a wonderful opportunity for owners to show off their pets and for us to see the positive, rewarding relationships people have with their animals.

“The winning pet will feature in our advert which highlights the work we do caring for pets and we hope it will encourage people to support us as the demand for our services continues to increase with more pets facing an uncertain future.”

• People can visit bluecross.org.uk/pawditions to cast their vote before the lines close on Monday, February 9 and the winner will be revealed later this year.
