SIX people were rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out at a Hampshire care home.

More than 25 fire-fighters battled the blaze which happened at a care home in Villiers Road in Southsea.

The fire broke out in the basement of the home and 21 residents managed to escape safely while fire-fighters came inside the building and located six people who were 'unaccounted' for.

They were checked over by ambulance crews from South Central Ambulance and two people were taken to hospital with slight smoke inhalation.

Five fire engines attended the incident, including three from Southsea and two from Cosham, while a fire crew from Portchester also arrived as command support.

They used 10 breathing apparatus, two hose reels and two jets to fight the flames.

The incident happened at 11:10am on Tuesday night and the stop call was at 1.19am this morning.
