FIRE crews were called to a Fareham home last night after a dishwasher blaze.

Black smoke poured into the kitchen of the property in Kings Road, Fareham after electrical elements caught fire.

The retained firefighter who lives there alerted Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service after his smoke alarm sounded and he smelt burning.

A team from Fareham fire station rushed to the rescue at 12.30am and put out the smouldering blaze before it spread.

Now firefighters have urged people not to leave electrical items on overnight or when no one is home.

Watch manager Simon Wheeler said: “Putting electrical items on overnight is not a great idea because when you go to sleep it takes you longer to get out or see what's happening.

“It really does go to show a working smoke alarm raised the alarm nice and early and gave the residents the opportunity to get out of the building. They're there to keep you and your family safe.”
