DESPITE gusts of up to 60mph some people in Hampshire were still parking their cars dangerously close to the shoreline - as shingle and stones were whipped up by the wind.

It comes as strong winds are hitting parts of the county today and are causing waves containing stones to crash over the shore line.

Fareham Police tweeted their amazement at seeing cars parked close to the sea.

Daily Echo:

The Daily Echo saw people parked up by the shoreline, despite the strong gales whipping inland.

By cars were stones that had been whipped up from the beach by the intense wind, as pictured above.

One windsurfer braving the conditions said: "It was pretty stormy but I was fine, I'm going to back out in it again."

At certain places near the shore it was visible where waves had come flying over the top, as a water trail remained.

The conditions have seen the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning and it has caused travel chaos in the county.

Hovertravel suspend its services from the Isle of Wight due to the windy conditions earlier today, while a tree fell on to a busy Hampshire road as the A337 northbound.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: “We gently remind people that if you are going to park your car next to the shore line in high winds it could be damaged by the stones from the waves.”
