A SHOCKING video appears to show a driver watching TV in their car at a Hampshire motorway junction.

The incident happened at junction 9 of the M27, near Whiteley, where a screen showing a video can be seen in the front of the motorist’s car.

Quick-thinking fellow road user Jon Ashley captured the footage using a dashcam and said he was “flabbergasted and horrified” by what he saw.

The film shows the car stopped at traffic lights and using zoom technology Mr Ashley could see that the screen was watching moving footage.

Locks Heath resident Mr Ashley, 46, said: “I actually could not believe what I was seeing and it took me a few seconds to realise, hence the zoom delay as I was gobsmacked he was watching TV or a video and it could take me some seconds to react.

“I have seen some people texting and whilst that is bad enough, watching a TV programme has to be plain stupid.

“It is completely irresponsible behaviour and an accident waiting to happen especially if this driver is in a town where there are pedestrians everywhere. One momentary lapse and he's on the pavement.”

A date stamp on the video shows the incident happened at about 9pm on May 5 this year.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, Hampshire Police were left disappointed last month after 141 drivers using mobile phones were stopped by officers despite several crackdowns on the illegal activity.

Hampshire Constabulary Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard said: “It seems many people still do not understand the dangers of using a mobile phone, other handheld devices or other distractions while driving. The number of drivers caught has halved compared to a similar operation in January.

“However this still isn't good enough.”
