A HAMPSHIRE MP has described a damning report on a nursing home as one of the worst he has ever seen.

George Hollingbery has spoken out after Ashley Manor Nursing Home at Shedfield was branded “inadequate” and placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission.

As reported in the Daily Echo, CQC inspectors identified a raft of issues including staff shortages, poor hygiene and lack of training.

CQC staff are continuing to monitor the home, which could be shut down if it fails another inspection in six months’ time.

Mr Hollingbery, Tory MP for the Meon Valley, said: "After reading the CQC's report, I can say it is one of the worst I have seen.

"The fact that the inspectors found services weren’t safe, effective or caring goes to the very heart of what a nursing home should offer.

"I'm pleased that the CQC is taking robust action by placing the home in special measures. I very much hope the elderly residents and their families will soon see the necessary improvements.

"In the meantime, I will be talking regularly with the CQC to ensure I'm kept up to date with developments."

Last night a man who removed his grandfather from the home said: “The place stank of body odour and urine – the smell hit you like a brick wall when you went in.

“People were living in squalor. My grandfather said it was one of the worst experiences of his life.

“The staff were always on their phone or texting and didn’t seem to know anything about their patients when you spoke to them.

“I didn’t think it was a safe environment for my grandfather. Thankfully we managed to get him into another home after two weeks.”

The CQC report says staff failed to monitor residents’ food and fluid intake, putting them at risk of developing malnutrition and dehydration.

It also criticises the “unsafe” storage, handling and administration as well as describing parts of the home as “dirty”, including the kitchen.
