FLASH floods are caused “traffic mayhem” across Hampshire as torrential rain battered the county yesterday.

Cars were piling through two feet of water in Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh, after Monk’s Brook burst its banks.

The route, near Stoneham Park and Eastleigh football ground, was set to be closed.

Railway lines have been flooded and trains cannot travel to Hedge End or Botley, while the track between Salisbury and Romsey was also submerged, but both routes have since reopened.

A flood warning - signalling that immediate action is required - has been issued for the River Blackwater between Hampworth and Ower, while a less serious alert has been issued for the Lower Avon between Ringwood and Burton.

A flood alert is also in place for the River Lymington at Brockenhurst, where water levels are expected to rise for the next 14 hours.

Bus replacement services have been extended between Sway and Brockenhurst.

Regarding the Eastleigh flooding county councillor Andy Moore said: “It’s causing traffic mayhem here. There’s so much traffic here – it’s terrible.”

This morning’s downpours also led to a burst manhole in Kiln Lane, Highbridge, where water was “pouring into the River Itchen,” according to Cllr Moore.

Highways chiefs were considering closing the road, but Kate Davey, of nearby Brambridge Garden Centre, said: “It’s just the usual.”

Traffic was flowing normally, Ms Davey added.
